This is my current setup, and I'm just itchin' to upgrade! Actually I've got an extra 256Mb PC133 RAM (from my dad) and was gonna build my sister a box from a Duron and one of those cheap ECS Sis 735 boards; then I thought of just giving her my current system and upgrading myself to a P4/PC133 solution, or maybe something else....

The current volatility of DDR speeds, the unknown RAMBUS factor, and the decision between a P4 or Athlon just makes things pretty tough these days for any obvious upgrade solution.

What would you do...keep the current setup, upgrade to something now, wait for the new P4 533mhz bus components, AMD Hammer, or what?

The choice today is between the Athlon XP and P4 Northwood. The XP makes for an excellent rig with a whole bunch of good choices out there in terms of motherboards, but the Via KT333 is probably your best bet in terms of chipsets.

As for what to put a P4 Northwood in, you have to choose between an Intel 850 solution with Rambus memory, or a DDR solution, the best of which is the SiS 645dx chipset since it supports a 533 MHz. FSB speed and can overclock the snot out of a P4 Northwood! Intel is about to come out with a new version of their 845 chipset that will also support that speed if you're a little queasy about dealing with SiS (a concern which history proves out)

Would I wait or build? That depends on how much disposable income you have! You can always wait for the next big "thing", but what's the fun in that???
