Get an XP not an MP. XP will work with any Socket A board. Why on earth would you need 3GB of RAM?

Why not. The more the merrier. If he has the cash, let him. I'll wait until he realises he's not going to use the other 1-2 GB and then convince him to part with it for a knock down price.
