Lads, they want a cool $90 Aus dollars for the new CIV game and I'm not one to shell out those kinds of dollars for any old pc game. But I am keen on the CIV series and wouldn't mind picking it up. That said:
Anyone played the retail version and is there anyone who can succinctly and honestly tell me that it is worth paying full retail for?
I saw it.. didn't care for it, seemed like it all over again with a few twinkles here and there.
I was never a fan of any of the Civ games though. Wait a few months and it'll drop in price, but it seemed like the same game over again with newer stuff and features.
Almost like playing Command and Conquer.. from Red Alert to Zero Hour.. it's the same, just different things.. but I think C&C showed more development in the end.
I m still getting use to the interface. It seems more of a memory Hog then the other civs. I use up to 800mb of ram or virtural ram lol. But I like to play On huge world. Battle are neat. Adding the world was a cool idea. Religion is a nice. Best idea is check here. http://forums.civfanatics.com/
Think of it as the most refined Civilization yet. It's not going to change anybody's mind about the series, but as far as people who like it are concerned, there's two sides to this:
Modern graphics and a better interface along with all those minor tweaks was worth my money.
Or:
I just spent money on graphics and a megapatch for the game I already own?
So find out which type of guy you're likely to be. You can try out the demo if you want to. Although I've heard the number of turns it's limited to is JUST when the game is starting to pick up the pace a lot.
EDIT: Oh, and by the way, if tactics are more your thing rather than a bit of everything with empire building the way Civ works, then the Advance Wars series on Gameboy Advance and DS is awesome. Then there's also X-Com. I think it was recently remade in UFO Aftershock or something, but I've heard it has StarForce.
yes, its good. turn based, good graphical detail and last nite i nuked the yanks off the map'
i bought it from electronic boutique, which has a sale this month i paid $75au for it. eb is a games specific francise(my bad!) and is in most major cities in au.
i dont think it will be a good internet game untill people have on average more powerfull pc's, and don't take a month to take their turn.

just to clean up "riser's" comments- cnc is a rts,not a turned based stratege totally different as you can go for a leak and not come back and find you been destroyed.
noticed they will bring out a new cnc game soon- i hope its not crawling with hax like all the other internet cnc series games.
hax are killer's of such a great gaming, maybe ea could police randomly the servers which are public of cheats and code hax.
i know i won't buy another ea game untill the resolve hax's in their internet games. this is the difference between producers like the now bought out "westwood studios" and giant corp's like ea, who would sell their own mothers(mom's) to turn a buck.lol
if you like the other civ's then you'll like this. IMO it's kinda like an update to civ3 while stil being an individual game. there's alot more depth as well what with different civics and religion playing a more realistic part especially in the early stages.
i'd say get it but you may be dissapointed you may not. hell the fact that they have leonard nimoy doing voice overs when you discover new techs is worth it alone
I love Civ 4, but I still find Civ 3 Conquests more addicting. I miss the amazing power of fascism mixed with an industrial civilization and replaceable parts.
I still play Civ II but hated III. The first time I conquered a city on a different continent, and the very next turn lost it due to "cultural influence", I shelved it.
I use the cultural influence to win my games. Next time you play civ3 build libraries and stadiums and stuff to push your culture out. Build cities near the enemy junction points and go mad building culture until you cut off their routers .
Initailly I really preferred Civ2 over Civ3. Civ3 didn't really get my interest until the expansions. Now, as for Civ4 I liked it from the get-go, and also like the Warlords expansion. I think it has the most 'authentic' Civ feel since the original.
I like playing a really long game that spans a few 8 hours periods of play. My strategy is to expand as fast as possible and eat up the land and good resources then use culture to lock it in. I put units on the tiny areas my borders don't reach just to ensure the enemy can't barge in. In the long Civ4 I played I wasn't so pleased because the world was unhappy when I rushed in and slaughtered the Africans off the jump. After that it was a political battle field and I couldn't initiate an attack anywhere because my borders were huge and everyone was so cross-allied that it would lead to global war.
Civ3 was a little easier to kick some butt. Its been the only game I've played for the last 13 years. Unreal Tournament is the other one.
I can't wait for Duke Nukem Forever. Its been coming out for the last 5-6 years I think. They keep passing it around and changing engines but I just read an article saying a company has bought the rights and is putting $4.5 million into its dev to get it pushed out by December, which means it should be released in the year 2064 along side personal transporters.
