might be a silly question, but is there that much of
a difference between the chipsets?
I got a AMD761 mobo..but there's also KT266A, KT133A,
and now comes nForce...
is there really a noticeble performance difference
between these chipset mobo's?

Some chipsets perform better than others.
I'm not sure about all of them, but I think the KT266 is better than the KT133(which is older).

the performance differences of those chipsets may not be huge but the memory they can handle is the big thing. Via, for all its faults, at least has a handy way of naming their chipsets:

KT133/133A = PC133 SDRAM
KT266/266A = 266DDR SDRAM (PC2100)
KT333 = 333DDR SDRAM (PC2700)

Notice there is no KT333A (yet). With Via, A usually means better. The KT266 is slower than the KT266A etc.

In terms of speed, starting with the fastest

KT266A or KT333 (they are pretty close)
nForce or the SiS735 (I have never seen a head to head review of these 2, so I'm not sure)
AMD 761

I don't know where the KT133A falls into that mix, since it cant handle DDR mem I stopped looking into it a long time ago. >>>edit: but to clarify, yes its slower.

Hope this helps, pls someone correct me if I made any mistakes.
