So, I've just died, and I hear the order for my squad to go over to
defence. So I spawn at the defence location as an engineer, and start
to lay mines around access points to the flag... Hmm, this will stop
those pesky jeeps zooming in and taking the flag I think to myself....

So I'm nicely hidden away waiting for things to happen, when a retard
spawns in, jumps into a jeep and zooms straight towards the
flag....KABOOM! tk punish me #1. Then an APC comes whizzing in to
camp, decides it wants to turn around and DOUBLE KABOOM! driver and
passenger tk punish me. Hey I'm still on defence and theres an ammo
crate here, so I load up on mines and start to defend the flag again.
I just get myself hidden again, when an enemy tank rolls into base -
KABOOM! Whoo-hoo I actually killed an enemy with a mine, and I get a
bonus flag defend point! Then another of our jeeps comes racing into
town, rolls up to the flag and misses my mines (goddam tank left a
gap), so the driver decides to do a nifty three point turn to ensure
that he clips one of my mines - KABOOM, yet another tk punish (in fact
I think he's got a passenger too, but it's hard to tell how many idiots
have killed themselves, when limbs are flying everywhere). So here I
am, my OK positive score suddently negative in the space of 2 minutes.
I'm starting to feel a little annoyed now, so I have a choice... do I
give up with the mines and just hang around waiting for the enemy
attack, or do I defend the flag with the best tools available? OK, I
think I've killed most of the 'tards on my own team, so I decide to try
the mines again. I could type out the events that followed, but It's
just more of the same.

Punish TK is both a curse and a blessing. I see very little TK on
public servers, so it seems to be stopping that. BUT, it's also
totally destroyed the tactical use of mines. Mines are incredibly
useful to help defend flags, but who cares about the team objective of
defending a flag when some idiot will drive over a mine and blame you?

I'm colour-blind and find the red symbols difficult to see in some
circumstances, but these mines could easily be seen! There is no
excuse for killing yourself on mines - how much clearer could EA have
made it? I accept that accidents happen, but why punish the engineer
for some other idiots lack of attention?

So, my solution to this problem is very simple....make the punish tk
more difficult to do. At the moment if you are TK'ed, all that you
have to do is press one of a choice of 2 keys (sometimes I feel that
it's a choice of 1 key grrr). So instead, remove the automatic "do you
want to punish this player" dialogue, and make the TK'ed player have to
select a specific punish button from the control screen (the one you go
to to change kit and spawnpoint). That way it's more effort to punish
someone, yet you can still punish valid TKers.

Just for the record, I finished the round with something like -16 and
server kick as well.

EA are "supposed" to be changing the punish for mines in 1.03.

In the meantime, maybe you could refer them to this:

Even worse, the symbols for AT-mines, Claymores and C4 are identical.
You'd have to decide really fast wether that area is being defended by
engineer, sniper or SpecOps to know wether it's safe to
walk/drive/whatever.

Agree, should be easy enough to cancel tk punishment for mine kills, and
symbols for C4 and claymores are simply not needed.

It's my hope that mine and claymore TK's get registered as normal suicides
with the patch. Artillery would be another good candidate. If you can't pay
attention to the icon on the map, you deserve evolutionary pay-back.

Not needed for Claymores!? Surely you jest Herr Nieveler? (I sometimes
manage even to set off my own claymores).

OTOH, I've been TKed by my own artillery because I had a choice: take a
chance against the incoming artillery or face certain death trying to
escape past the enemy the artillery is really for. And no, I don't
punish for TKs by artillery.

To judge from our kick/ban log, my teammates see an awful lot of it on our
server.

I've only been deliberately TK'd a couple of times, and never got the
chance to punish him after confirming it. I forgive by default and only
punish the obvious repeat offenders.

I like being notified of the TK, but I'd rather see the punish require
console action, as the average gamer can't type worth a damn.

My best TK punish story is on Mashtuur City. I was behind a wall with a
teammate standing next to me, and there were some enemies on the other
side. I'm getting ready to throw some grenades over, and just as I'm
throwing the grenade the teammate next to me suddenly shoots and kills
me. Since I was just throwing the grenade, it drops in place, explodes,
and kills the teammate who just TKed me. What does he do? Yep,
register a TK punish.

The only thing I TK punish for is being run over at the spawn by over
eager drivers. It should take a few seconds s
to start a vehical. I mean you can't jump in your car and drive
instantly... it would give people time to mount up. Also I don't like
the tanks, how come the driver can fire the weapons??? In JO you need a
tank driver and a gunner to operate the tank properly, anyway I digress
TK's and the punishments for defense mines, next time type up a message
on screen warning your team that they are there?? maybe lots of times!!

LOL!
If you miss that warning symbol, and still run over the mine, the
killmessage should read "[XXX]Idiot was nominated for this years Darwin
Award".

Changing so two people min required for a tank would be a great
improvement for on-line play. Team tactics and squad play seem to have
largely disappeard. It's more and more like MOHAA on-line everyday....

Personally I would absolutely hate that suggestion.

The objection to people driving away without passengers is justified. But
I've accidentally killed folk who rush in front of me or brush the side of
the vehicle. I have to mince out of a spawn area to avoid all the lemmings
who pay no attention to the situation around them. (And I've been known to
run in front of vehicles and get killed, but I don't punish for that, as I
know it's my fault.)

Yeah, one has lots of time to type messages that won't be read when you
know the enemy is about to come rushing into the base. Esp. ones that tell
your team which base and which entrance has the mines, right? It'd take a
novel to explain that, and no one would read it anyway. Far simpler to pay
attention to where you're going. If you're driving so wrecklessly that you
can't see friendly mines (which I always place on the friendly side of a
blind approach), how are you going to see the enemy ones that lack the red
warning marker?

Lack of icon difference doesn't bother me too much since I don't like to
drive or walk over friendly C4 either. I've seen too many Spec Ops guys use
the 'make loud boom first, ask questions later' tactic.

It would also be guaranteed death if the enemy is there. Me and an enemy
guy both running for a jeep? The one that gets to the jeep last would be
practically guaranteed a free kill. Not to mention if I hopped in that jeep
hoping to escape the enemy tank or APC that suddenly rolled into view.
Makes me think of those horror movies where the girl gets in the car but
keeps fumbling with the keys while the killer gets closer and closer to her
window.

I'm game, as long as it's *you* riding shotgun. :)

Yes, I've noticed the same decline. Seemed to be much more when the game
first came out. Very rare now. Lots and lots of squads (I'm so sick of
seeing the "Maximum squads reached" message. Why do I need to be told
everytime some bozo tries to create anothe squad?). But the squads are
often just one, maybe two players (meaning the guy created a squad just so
he can call in supplies or arty). And most of the larger squads are people
spread out all over the map not acting like a squad at all. Very sad because
being in a squad that actually *acts* as a squad is very fun (and
point-rewarding, too, since they tend to kick butt).

Try to find some good servers. I can recommend AGB East and West. But
there are probably more good servers out there, with a teamplaying
community providing a good backbone of players.

funny tk story. I am usually pretty cool, but those b.s. tk's are the only thing that will on occasion get the old CRT thumped.

This happens to me almost every night I play the game.

me, just getting into a tank, i see a couple of friendly spawns so I wait to see if I can get a gunner. fafter 5-10 seconds, nobody makes a move, so i pop off a few warning shots, and start to roll. then some a-hole runs under the tread of my tank and dies, and immediately issues a punish. The same for jeeps and any other vehicle.

I have never issued a punish under the cirsumstances of me trying to get into a vehicle that someone else was driving. its 99/100 times my fault, and sometimes you can get on the vehicle even when it is moving quickly, but if I die, I die. its my fault for trying. Also, it may be some baby who wanted the tank or helo, or whatever. thats so cheap.
