just something that came to me, but anybody think that the Microsoft/XBox will win Sony/Playstation over the long term?
with the ps3 delayed and more and more xbox games and systems coming out it seems that it has potential to rival sony this generation
BUT.... the benefit that MS has, is that most of the xbox is based on PC architecture (heavily customized but still PC based). NOW say PS3 did manage to win the PS3 vs XBOX360 battle (not factoring Nintendo but it could potentially pull an upset
), MS can still have a XBOX720 (
) out in 2-3 yrs if they like, because they can just build on the current pc advances in graphics and chip technology and still make the xbox720 backward compatible.
so by the time PS3 starts getting a into gear, a new XBOX can possible come out, still play the old games and will probably be 10x more powerful then the ps3.
so my timeline is something like this:
11/2005 Xbox360 comes out
11/2006 PS3 comes out
sometime in 2007/2008 PS3 is possibly deemed the winner of the battle
sometime 2009 xbox720 gomes out. nothing really but an enchancement of the current xbox360. more features better specs, nicer graphics/games (think of it like a die shrink
)
2009-2012 PS3 (still out) versus Xbox720... which will you buy???
so i think that even if MS loses the xbox360 vs PS3 they're in a better position in the long term. look at how long between xbox ->x360 and compare that to PS1->PS2->ps3
If you want my opinion, I think this is the last year of consoles. With the internet and how computers are moving these days, we may be playing all of our games through one entertainment box. 2012 computers will have 12core processors (based on an Intel time line) 6 years from now... Sony and Microsoft will still be around I'm sure, but A LOT will have changed by then... A LOT. Internet access will be available everywhere you go, something the size of the PSP now will be faster then the PS3 or XBOX360 by then. I'm excited, but 6 years from now ill be 27... crap that seems so old, lol (no offense to anyone older)

Don't think so we have had PS2 for a long time and it still kicks out some good games. Energy is starting to come into play also as the cell cpu is low voltage. XBOX is said to be the best game machine while the PS3 is set to be a complete home system. Blu-ray, 60GB harddrive and free internet gaming. Sounds better then paying for XBOX live.
I think MS will have to start giving XBOX live away for free after 8 months of PS3. PS3 will have to get new games not Metal Gear 20.. Snake is weet but we need new blood. Also, we'll see the death of several vendors.
In the US market X-Box 360 I think has a really really good chance of winning. World-wide and especially in Japan PS3 will dominate. X-Box 360 is already selling poorly in Japan, just wait till PS3 and those sales will most likely drop even further. And maybe, just maybe the Revolution really will be a revolution and blow us all away.

i dont think so. Even though Xbox is PC based, PS3 is still very competitive in development as evident wtih Unreal 2k7 and MGS4 and GT5.
There's no way that MS can have xbox720 or w/e in the next 10 years, that would piss off consumers really bad. Just think, you bought something for $400 and been paying monthly for it, then in 2 years, you found out that you have to pay $400 more to be able to beat something that only cost $400 once.
Now seriously think: Xbox720 vs PS3, which one will u buy? Especially if u know that ur system might be obsolete again in 2 years as evident with MS dropping current Xbox almost completely and that u will have to pay $400 every 2 years just to keep up with Sony, while Sony can just make a jump every 10 years and still keep up.

PS3, it has better games. infact when i think about it when i go into town the range of games for the xbox360 is just the top 20, thats like it, thats a great range of games that 20 titles on 6 4foot selves....and the rest of the section is filled with addons for the 360, like the harddrive or the controllers....
when i look at the PS though theres a full 5 sets of 6, 4foot selves. filled with games and 1 set of 6, 4foot selves that carry the memory cards controllers and stands.
i love the PS, and can honestly say the ONLY game i actually wanted the xobox for was Halo and Halo 2, the next M$ console wont be the xbox720 but the Halo720
.
This may sound extream but if halo 3 gets released at the same time as PS3 then xbox is hands down winner.
FPS games might attract the average western gamer, but the asian market is more based on rpgs and mmos etc. Out of the 2 people I know who owned an xbox, both asian, none even thought about buying halo. Me and a lot of my friends have no intention to own the xbox as the console itself might be very capable of producing the goods, there simply ain't enough (dare I say it, any) title to back it up.
Looking at the games already out and TBA, all I can see are NHL, NFL, NBA and a bunch of games already came out on PC already. Most games that gets moved from PC to console have far inferior game play due to the game being designed for a PC in the first place, if I have to plug a keyboard and mouse into a console why don't I just play the game on my PC? And all the NHL NBA etc are essentially the same game with slightly improved graphics and updated stats. Pretty graphics vs good gameplay, I know what I'd pick.
At the moment the revolution (I refuse to call it Wii) will be the first 3rd gen console for me, followed by the PS3, then maybe when the 360 drops to a £99 price tag I'll buy it if I can mod it to be a server or something.
I think as things progress you will see fewer exclusive titles, especially if say M$, Sony and Nintendo divvy up the console market more evenly. Developers need money too and they will break the contractual iron grip of the hardware maker if their survival and or profit margins are threatened.
If the PS3 is really that hard to write code for and the similarities between the 360 and the PC make it easier to get titles out the door then Microsoft will likely capture more market share and be a much bigger player this round.
In the end it will be about which hardware gives the best gaming experience. The developers will write games for it even if they have to rename and repackage the games to do it.
Of course it's easier to have games out on the 360 for some developers, they are all PC games. For the last time I don't want to see PC games on consoles. If you want to play PC games so bad, buy a PC. The rave about voice comms on 360, I just don't see what the fuss is about. It's not like Ventrilo and TS is news, it's all over PC ideas on consoles, and I couldn't care less about it.
I'm just happy I'm not a western gamer and limited to the games you get to play. All these games I hear my non asian friends talk about are always Halo, GTA, NFS etc, and it's the same with reviews you see on english sites.
Many successful games in asia didn't even get an english port, nevermind making it onto an xbox. The trend will continue, as many good games don't sell in the US. I await the line up from the 360 for 2008: NFL, NHL, NBA 2k8, Halo 3, NFS underground extremz, GTA 4, yawn.
Well, with the passage of E3, it's clear that all of the old deabte of "Sony vs. Microsoft" was well off of the mark; I think it's pretty clear that this is a 3-horse race, not a 2-horse one.
And I'll say, each horse is brining a lot to the table. Enough, I think, to say that what we'll see doesn't necessarily have to resemble the last round, at all.
Personally, I see Sony losing some of its market share this round, with one of the chief elements being its high initial cost for the Playstation3. Yes, I know they're vastly undercutting the costs, but they were the ones who picked "Cell." Yes, I know that there's something called "inflation," but I also know that PC hardware really hasn't changed too much; a top PC graphics card in 2000 cost $500US, (GeForce 2 Ultra) while today, it's also $500US. (GeForce 7900GTX/Radeon X1900XTX) Yes, I know that the price could be figured to include "free" online gaming, but I also know that Nintendo, which must now ALSO be recognized as a competitor, will be doing the same thing, and Microsoft's service may become free in the not-so-distant future; and besides, it's still "only" $50US a year right now.
As for Microsoft, that's largely up in the air. They placed a lot on their bet that being first-to-market would be the deciding factor. It's also clearly costing them some things, that may greatly diminish their chances of improving over the original's distant second-place finish. I think they make a market share increase, but not a massive one.
Lastly, I feel that Nintendo, with the "Wii," just may actually increase market share. Obviously, price is a major attraction point; it's clearly "next-gen" in power, but even if it doesn't match even the Xbox 360, it will be hard to argue with a price that's potentially $200US, and won't be wasted if used on your existing SDTV (only 10% or so of US households have HDTVs anyway, or so I've heard; that's vastly less than the market for gaming consoles)
I also keep in mind that price becomes a stronger element outside of the USA, where they tend to be HIGHER, thanks to cross-ocean shipping, and Value Added Tax." (fellow Americans can think of it as Sales Tax on steroids, averaging 20%) The PS3 will have a lot going against it if, say, the actual price someone in Australia or Scandanavia (areas known for particularly inflated hardware prices) come up to the neighborhood of $1,000US. That just won't be pretty.

I will have my doubts; if we look at the predecessors, the PS2 sold 70 million units, while Halo 2 sold 7 million copies, making it a 10:1 ratio (on another note, Grand Theft Auto: San Adreas for the PS2 sold more than Halo 2)
While the Halo franchise is undisputably a strong token, its fans fail to realize it's vastly different from everything. It should be noted that the several million Xbox 360 units that have sold thus far weren't due to promises of Halo 3.
These companies’s can’t build games just for one countries taste in gaming. If you want to sell your product you meet the needs of as many of your customers as you possibly can. Forcing the customer to conform to your needs won’t cut it for very long. Sony is on the wrong track attempting to mingle it’s BlueRay ambitions with the PS3. If you had Xbox Live you would be able to download functioning demos of new games. It’s no stretch of the imagination that online purchase and distribution of games could work. I like having access to more content without having to pay $50 or $60 to find out if the game is what I really wanted.
In addition other more capable formats, (Holographic), are in the pipeline that may render the current crop obsolete before this hardware cycle ends. Frankly I am a little tired of constantly changing formats. It’s the same data, bytes and bits, whatever medium carries it.
How about some stability for a change. Since Pc makers will not likely be using the Cell processor for anything but almost certainly will use multicore processors, I doubt future Xbox game systems will have backwards compatibility issues. Many of the Xbox 360 capabilities can be upgraded, WiFi standard, Hard drive size, rom drive type. The Ps3 is more of a tech dead end. Brand loyalty will only get customers in the door, but in the end, providing the best value wins the day.
So a new format with more storage capabilities is bad? I wonder if you said the same thing when DVDs were launched, look at where the technology brought us today. Don't worry you can always pay more money and upgrade on options ie HD DVD for the 360 right? Or else how can MS suck more money out of your pocket?
Download full version games? No thanks, especially not on games that's easily gonna be a full DVD's volume or even more. With games costing £40 or so each I'd rather have a hard copy. And what's gonna happen when you fill your HD? Oh that's right you can always buy a bigger one from MS.
Judging from your posts you are indicating that you want a console that's basically a PC. When I buy a console I want it to be a console. I have a PC that would play any games you throw at it, and I have to spend money to upgrade my computer every year anyway why would I do that with a console too? Exactly how is that good value?
Have a look at the best sellers charts and see what games are there. I'm sorry NOT ONE game on there brinsg the slightest interest to me. Movie spin offs? Another NFS? Great collection of games! I'm happy I didn't buy a 360 when it launched, or I'd be stuck with no games to play and it'd either be put away together with my old consoles now or it can fail to impress another friend of mine. Imo Sony didn't even need to launch a PS3, I'd take a PS2 over a 360 anyday.
what will ps3 have at launch? mgs4?360 has gears of war which looks truly like a next gen game, FF13? As if we didnt have enough FF's already i think its time they stop the whole anime game type garbage already and move over to realism more.
If anything, how can they lose in the long term? Microsoft is rolling in dough. Microsoft sees consoles as an invasion of HTPC territory (read Xbox360: Uncloaked, or the review). With the financial backing of Windows and whatever else Microsoft makes, they are like the undead or something: they have limitless resources. They can just keep pumping money into it until Sony just dies, or altogether buy Sony. Microsoft is Microsoft. Like the Netscape of years past, the Play Station will fall before Microsoft's capitalist army of walking paper-mache money mechs!
I may be exaggerating a bit.
| Quote : free internet gaming. Sounds better then paying for XBOX live. |
It's free because its nothing. Absolutely nothing. Nothing is provided by Sony. With the PS2 it was free but there was nothing there. The few games that did have online components most of them you had to pay individual monthly fees to play it. It will be the same with the PS3 most likely.
Xbox Live is incredibly cheap for what you are getting. Nearly every title for the Xbox 360 will have some tie in to Xbox Live. So you get to play every game available for Xbox Live + have content downloads easily accessible and pretty damn cheap. Xbox Live is the same price as a single MMO as well and you get integrated voice chat which is something almost every MMO can't boast.
That being said I have an Xbox and tried out Xbox Live. It wasn't for me though. But a ton of people enjoy it and it has nearly as many subscribers as WoW.
Point is, don't compare an established, well laid out system thats a great deal and costs a little money to a system that doesn't exist and might be free if it ever does exist.

Amen. That, and that PS3 that the fanboys can't see past into the real juice, the games and graphics, and most importantly, price. 600 bucks for something decent? No thanks. 500 for something not-worth-it? No thanks again. ~16 MBps Local Read Speed is nearly dooming the PS3 from the very day it comes out, making it number 2 out of the shed. This is the inquirer, however, to take it like with a grain of salt. Still, if the PS3 sounded good so far, I'd be backing it up. It's sounds like a piece of, well, poop, at this stage in the game. That Nintendo-ripoff controller isn't doing it favors either.
| Quote : i think its time they stop the whole anime game type garbage already and move over to realism more. |
What's the point of playing video games if it's so real you can do it in real life?
So Microsoft is there with all the innovating ideas all of a sudden? They never ripped off an idea off someone else or just bought competition out altogether? There's a difference between copying someone's idea and suck, and making it even better.
I still see online gaming belonging to PCs and consoles should stick to what consoles do. I want a simple machine that plays traditional games on my TV when I plug it in, I don't want updates and patches to a game (why on Earth should I need a patch?). Xbox live is nothing, it's having TS2/Ventrilo on a console and charging you money to use it. Also most online game formats are played best with the keyboard/mouse combo (RTS, FPS, MMO), and this combo is crap with console gaming full stop.
The debate goes on and on and we won't have a conclusion until the PS3 is out. Point is some would think 600 USD for a console is expensive, then don't buy one if you think that way. Ferraris are expensive too, it don't make them bad cars simply cos you can't afford it. I found the 360 to be absolute junk, tested it and even after the price drop up to this point I still think it's not worth my money. It's all relative to what YOUR opinion is. At least Sony as a brand gives me a very positive image towards their quality, I owned various Sony products and they are all reliable and proved to be worth every penny I spent (I have the original walkman and it still works now!). Can you seriously link the word reliable with Microsoft the same way as Sony? Sony didn't gain fans from nothing, you pay the premium for superior quality. One of the very first words I'll link to Microsoft is bugs, wonder why?

I have owned 2 VAIO laptops, not by choice, and each one had the flimsiest construction I've ever touched. Both broke and I had to replace each one several times. To me, Sony oozes of poor quality. They used to be good, in the early 90s and late 80's when their TV's were the standard of every home. We still have TVs from as early as 1987 that works fine, no problems, nothing. What was once great decayed into a rotting corpse of poor decisions (DRM, cough cough) and horrific quality. Microsoft to me signals bugs that get fixed and they find more, and fix those, and it's a never-ending cycle. That's just me of course, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
I've owned a couple of the VAIO range ultra portable laptops myself, one's been dropped from my desk onto floor with no carpet and it came off with only a scratch, certainly better off than the powerbook my dad owns which suffered the same treatment by me (Screen flickered right after the drop, lucky warranty had it covered.). I've bought various Sony products such as PSP, MP3 player, DC etc etc and none of them dissapointed me. My PSP also happened to survived a pint of beer and being dropped at least once a week for 10 months and it's still 90% new.
Why do we have to live with bugged products and have to get updates and fixes, when they can just not launch products that are ridden with bugs for us to test in the first place? Endless bug fixes only shows how bad a product the company launched, if the product is perfect they don't need to fix it, and they can spend the resource they use on bug fixing on something else.
As far as high end consumer electronics go, I'd buy something from Sony over most brands anyday.
Well I don't rely on Sony's word when the PS2 was out it looks so beautiful in paper but know the PS2 is bulls4!t. My Ps 2 got burned after playing 5 hours in a room with an AC at least it still had warranty then I change the PS2 and know my Ps2 will not read any disc because it says disc error and the disc doesn't have any scrathest on them. Then when I leave the PS2 4 fixing (the warranty ended so I send it to I guy that fixes C E) then the guy said that it was a error with the lens.conclusion MY PS2 NEVER FELT AND THE LENS WERE DAMAGED and had many problems.m$ WILL KICK Sony a$$ in sells but =the specs of the Ps3 seems to be better tha the 360 but who cares the 360 is cheapear and I don't care about the best graphics. Other thougth's if the 360 uses a modified Ati 1900 and the Ps3 uses a modified 7900GTX wich should win??
surely the 360 because it has 48 shaders (but I don't know if what I'm telling is true)
They will all win. Its a multi-billion dollar industry with plenty of $$$ to go around. Japan has a solid Sony foundation, while the US has a growing 360 foundation. Nintendo is loved by all and at 200 dollars with a next gen controller, its going to be in everyone's home around the world! I personally dont want a winner, I want the competition! Its all about the software, thats what makes or breaks a console. I'd love to see a 4th console manufacturer and really spice things up! I'm curious as to which console is going to utilize open-source, and push SDK's for flagship titles. Game modifications inspire creativity and generate outstanding products, counterstrike is a perfect example. I've enjoyed decades of gaming, from intellivision vs atari vs coleco vision, or the Amiga vs PC. Just keep the technology flowing, competition high, and enjoy the ride!
Both Sony and Microsoft have VERY poor business models, though fantastic systems.
When it came to NET profit in the last generation, believe it or not, Nintendo beat out both giants.
Sony and Microsoft continue to take losses on their consoles and make moderate profit on their games (which have driven down costs thanks to the incredibly firey demands of gamers-one of the 'smartest' markets of the bunch).
Nintendo meanwhile owns a niche market and sells all of its products pretty close to cost of production, thus losing very little on sales (and ending up with the most real profits at the end of the day, even though they are grossly outsold by their competitors).
I do not know who will the ultimate war because I don't know if either party CAN win that war (especially with the growing capabilities of computers). Pushing specs may indeed meet some cost vs. price walls in the next two decades.
Every XBox that gets made costs Microsoft. Every PS that gets sold costs Sony. It will take market growth for PS to become significantly more profitable. It will take HUUUUUGE market growth for XBox to become profitable at all.
So who will?
If anyone, Sony (most likely), but if not, then no one, and believe it or not, Nintendo will be sitting around with the same amazing profit to C.O.P. numbers its continued to boast since the 90s.
