I'm a new XP owner, and so far I love it, but my question is this: I have four children who are on
the computer with me, and they want to download a bunch of stuff, games, etc. now I am the
administrator, but i don't want any of that stuff on my desktop. will it be?

For the Desktop: check the C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder. You can
find a personal profile folder here for each user and an ALL USERS
folder as well. Each folder contains its own DESKTOP subfolder. Make
sure that ALL USERS\DESKTOP does only contain those items which you
want to have available from all profiles.
Software installers may put new shortcuts here. You cannot prevent
this, but after the installation you can move the items away to the
personal DESKTOP folders.
