Goal: a very nice system I can use for gaming, graphics, monitoring this board, etc. Windows 2K Pro SP2 and Linux OS's. Overclocking is a mild electrical engineering curiousity, not a primary goal of this system. I may overclock mildly if and only if stablility isn't affected.

Money Constraints: I don't want to overpay for top-of-the-line parts. I usually prefer chips a couple of steps down from the latest and greatest....looking for a sweet-spot on the price-performance curve. However, I WILL pay-up for better parts if the performance gain truly warrants it.

MOBO: leaning toward a KT333 (any reputable brand). Probably AGP 4x, ATA100 3 DDR DIMM slots, at least 3 PCI slots -- don't have many peripherals.

Question: 333 vs 266 trade-off? is it worth paying up?
Question: when will we see AGP 8x on MOBOs. I've seen references to it, but can't seem to find the part anywhere.
Question: How about DDR 400 capable boards?

Processor: Athlon XP 1700,1800,1900 or thereabouts is my most likely purchase (please argue with me on this!)

Question:Aside from raw speed differences, since these are all Palomino core, is there any difference in instruction sets? Is there a point closeby in the AMD hierarchy where a superior instruction set enters into the equation that would be worth paying up for?

Memory: 2100 DDDR CL 2.0 or 2700 CL DDR 2.5. Total 512 MB either in one dimm or in 2x256.
Question: 1 dimm or 2?
Question: How long before 2700 CL2.0?

Video Card: TBD
Sound Card: TBD -- some mobo's have integrated sound...should this be avoided in favor of a separate 3rd party card? Is sound tech really advancing as fast as video tech?
Monitor: TBD
Power supply: TBD - dependends on components I select
Case: TBD. asthetics count for little. Decent build, decent price

LEGACY components (for the time being)
ATA-100 60GB IBM HD (7200rpm) - I'm pleased with this
Sony CD-RW 8x-4x-32x. SLOWWW! but it does for now
Lite-On CR reader only ~40X? something like that
10/100 Ethernet card - I have several of various makes
3.25 floppy - may not even bother moving this to new box

Yes - I realize now that message was to textual for this board's culture. Numbers and bullet point style would probably have gotten more response. I may repackage some of my questions into that format

no prob, but a compressed version might be easier to comment.
