what exactly do the local computer shop's do for $30.00 to $50.00 for a pc "tune-up"? have windows xp, norton security and anti-virus. is there a program that keeps the system better optimized than windows does? checks to ensure hardware is configured in the best way? cleans out spyware, etc. thanks in advance for any and all help. beccabob :•)

I think it is a good way of making cash. They will probably run adaware (which you can get free on from www.download.com). they will usually also run spyware blaster (also free from previous site). They will defrag your drives, run a system clean up to remove temp files etc but it is easy enough to do that yourself. They will also run the windows updater to get any patches for windows. But you can do that yourself from www.windowsxp.com

I'm not sure sure that they do much else (ill keep an eye on this post if anyone knows different!). I still believe that with xp there is no better way to refresh your system than to reinstall the OS completely but you do need to know a little about the process to do it effectively.

man, that shop has a pretty good little scam going. 30 bucks to do so little? i wonder how many people bring their pc in for them to do it? i wonder if they have customers that bring theirs in monthly? rofl

yeah i did a full re-install and the performance improved so much.

i then learnt that my 2800+ fonts slows my computer down heaps LOL.

but keeping it clean you can have a fast XP install running for about a year before it gets a bit clogged.

2800 fonts - wow that must take ages to scroll down!!
That many fonts will dramatically slow down your performance so i would remove some!

They'll probably do minor adjustments, and blow out the dust, run scan disc, defag, delete the temp folder files, and laugh all the way to the bank, ha ha.

You will see MASSIVE PERFORMANCE IMPROVMENT he he ha ha!

Nope, they're just trying to make a buck. You can download software for $free.99 and get the same results.
