On a Dell 1550, on the first ethernet port, a sniffer shows that the card is
reporting bad checksum errors on nearly every packet it receives. In
Windows 2000, I configured Properties for the first ethernet port and
instead of Checksum Offload set to TX/RX, I set it to None. That
effectively disables the hardware based checksum processing.
As soon as I make that change, all of the packets in the sniffer now show
checksums as good.
What causes this to happen? Is there some workaround that would allow the
hardware based checksum to work on Windows 2000?
I have seen similar behavior on Compaq machines using their gigE fiber optic
cards. And with the Compaq cards I was able to find many other users who
report the same problem.
