How do you flash your bios in WinXP?
I have a asus cusl2 board and when I try to unzip the file it says: "cannot open the file it does not appear to be a vaid archive(I am downloading the beta bios on the asus web site). So question 1: what is this valid archive stuff and how do I get it fixed and 2. After I get the file to open right, how do I flash the bios?
Thanks

OK first of all, if you can't unzip the file it's NOT a valid archive, so download the new BIOS again.

Nearly all BIOS's update in a DOS environment, so of course this isn't going to work in WinXP, so you need to make a DOS boot disk.
To do this put Place a blank disk in the floppy disk drive.
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Right–click the floppy disk drive, and then click Format on the shortcut menu.
Click Create an MS–DOS startup disk, and then click Start.

Then follow instructions that came with the BIOS on how to flash your BIOS.

Ok I got the dos boot disk made no problem, thanks, but on unziping the bios update I always get a thing that says, "Insert the last disk of the multi volume set and click ok to continue." What is that? It makes it sound like I am trying to unzip a multitude of files when I am only trying to update my bios?

that's strange! well it sounds like the file you downloaded is spanned over a few zip files.

In the days when floopy disks were the largest portable way of moving files, files over 1.44Mb in size had to be zipped over many disks, so when you brought all your disks together you'd get messages like the one you got. I've no idea why that would be happening in this day and age though.
Have you tried downloading the BIOS again? Because you shouldn't be having any messages like that. Which BIOS are you after, i could go and try it for you.

Don't use WinZIP as Windows XP can unzip files itself. If you have been using Window's own unzipper then use WinZIP.

I would download the bios file to document; unzip it there, and copy only the files you need for the bios upgrade to your floppy. I use a win98se bootdisk to flash the bios. Write down the new file exactly as it appears: for example "2408.4sda.bin". After bootup, type "awdflash" and follow the directions. It will ask you if you want to save the old bios file. It should appear somewhere at the top of the screen when your system is checking the memory. Just hit the pause key and write it down before flashing.

Thanks, That would be great. I have the asus cusl2 with bios vbersion 1009, I am trying to go to the beta version bios #1012.007. I am doing this because my gf video card currently only runs in 2x(i guess its some glitch with these cards and mb) and I was told that the beta version bios may help.
Good advice on the winzip, I will uninstall that program and try again.

Thanks, I tried that and whenever I try to unzip it, no matter how many times I download it, it says,"The compressed zip folder is invalid or corrupted." Could it be a problem on there side? Or could it be a downloadmanager I use callded "Internet download manager"?

sounds like the archive is corrupted and you need a different site to download it from
