  1. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and not laugh at you despite your invitation to do so. :-P As you suspected, your graphics card is older and unsupported. I think the oldest cards the game supports are the GeForce FX series, which were two (or three?) after the GeForce 2. You'll need to update your card to play the game. Oblivion requires a pretty high system specification, although mid-level setups run the game fine with some reduced settings. (Still gorgeous, too.)

It's a shame you bought and opened the game without flipping it over first to check the bottom of the box for the full list of supported graphics cards. The list is very specific: if it isn't named specifically on the list, it isn't supported. Just because your card is a GeForce and there are other GeForce cards on the list does NOT mean all GeForce cards are supported.

Hopefully the store where you bought it will accept an opened box for a refund, or--better idea!--you can scrape together $100 or so to upgrade your graphics card.

As said, the GeForce2 series is not supported whatsoever. There are a few cards that may be listed as "unsupported," but have been sucessfuly used with the aid of some 3rd-party tools such as "OldBlivion" and "3DAnalyze," but yours is not even on that sort of list; to play Oblivion, you'll need a better video card.

To help put things into perspective, here's a "quick" list of video card types, and how they'll fare for Oblivion. Note that aside from what group cards are placed in, the order has little to no meaning:No chance - You won't ever be able to play Oblivion with these cards. Hey, neither did ANY of us ... once. Someday you may get the urge (and the courage).

Good luck and enjoy the game. IMHO, it's really amazing stuff.
  6. maby one day :P
  7. Nottheking, this was a really complete and helpful list; I hadn't seen all of this information in one place until you put it here. Thanks for that. I'm playing Oblivion just fine, but it was still nice to see my card in the "Clear Sailing" section. :-P

Thanks for the comment. I had a much larger list that also figured in performance, (and listed almost every single model of card in existence) but that was actually made before the game was released; even though benchmarks show it to have been even more accurate than I thought it'd be, there are still some things that I needed to fix with it, particularly involving the dissapointing performance from the GeForce cards.
  9. Can I just say as a regular around here that I think its tremendous that you went to so much trouble with that vid card list.

I commend you for taking the time to do that and helping a guy out. This is what the forumz are about.

Hear, hear. I was surprised to see my 6800 in the clear sailing list. Maybe I'll give Oblivion a go after all!
  11. For those who still refuse to upgrade to a DX9 card...there is a half-decent 3rd party alternative if you really want to try playing the game.

    www.oldblivion.com

It patches the game to use older shaders and DX8.1 calls. A friend is playing with good frames on system with an Athlon 1700+ and a Radeon 9000 :D
He says it basically looks like Morrowind now, but at least he gets to play it LOL.

So if you cant afford to upgrade, dont mind not being able to enjoy all the visual perks of this game -- but still want to play it. Give it a try. According to their supported cards list, the patch makes the game playable on a Geforce 3 Ti and up.
  12. On a Geforce3? !!! 8O

My Geforce3 is in my download box!!
