ASUS A7V266-EX causing problems?

I just purchased a pc with the ASUS A7V266-EX m/b, an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor, 256mb ddr ram pc2100. I am using Windows XP Professional. The problem is that the system only works with the cpu speed set to 1150 mhz, but
when i change it to 1533 mhz in the bios, my system starts up, reaches the windows xp logon screen; i type in the password, press enter and beep the system reboots. why is this happening and are there any solutions?
