xp pro reinstall ?

may need to reinstall the os. Can I reinstall over the existing os to fix the problem. Will that reset everthing to origional settings? What problems will I have with installed progrms that are on another partition?
If anyone has any ideas on either question I would appreciate the help. First major problem with xp pro for over a year now.

re-installation usually works fine for me. Old registry settings are still there.

Some programs on the same partition as your OS - may require reinstallation.

did a full clean reinstall, network and dial up internet is working just fine.
