Hey all, I was thinking about buying an Xbox 360 and a Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP, but I had a few questions first.

1) I have read that the Xbox 360 cannot upconvert DVDs from 480p to 720p. Would there be a noticeable difference between the two if I were using the above monitor? Another words is the Xbox decent at playing DVDs on the above monitor?

2) Also I have a decent 5.1 speaker surround system for my computer that uses three jacks to plug into my computer's sound card (a hercules fortismo 7.1). Is there any way I could use this setup on an Xbox360?

Thank you guys!!

1) 360 will scale a dvd to 720p/1080i. the problem you might face is the resolution of the monitor. the highest res that 360 can output is 1920 x 1080. your monitor is 1600 x 1200, which is less pixels, but a higher vertical resolution than it can output. If your monitor can handle 1440 x 1080 or 1280 x 1024 direct mapping then it should work ok. otherwise that monitor had better scale images well.

2) as far as 5.1 goes for the 360, the only output is SPDIF Toslink optical connection. In your situation the easiest solution would be to run the optical 5.1 through your comp and have it output to the speakers. If you dont have an optical input, you could upgrade to a sound card with opt in or add a second card with opt in and transfer the sound internally (not possible with some cards), or externally via digital coaxial.

Good luck

Hey thanks for the reply, on number 1 actually that monitor's native res is 1680x1050 as are most of the widescreen 20". Would a montor with that resolution work well with scaling and the xbox 360?

Also I checked my sound card and I do have an optical output on it. So would I have to run an optical cable from the xbox 360 to my sound card?

the dell monitor can be set up to place black bars around the image so you caould play at 1440 x 1080 perfectly. nice monitor btw, im looking to get the 24" version pretty soon.
