Sorry, I just did not know where to put this delicate question, so
after much pondering I desided to drop it here, in the "other" section.

Well, to my question then...
In a near future I intend to connect my two computers in a
"network", however...it will take some time before I actually
buy all the necessary stuff for this setup, so for now I thought of
using a nollmodem instead.

My question is:
Is it possible to play multiplayer games like ColinMcRae, AOE2 with
such a cable?, and, how "fast" is it?

What is a nullmodem? I actually started my "network" with a serial cable (or two), but the money spent on a couple NIC cards and a hub is well spent at the very least.

It really is simple so I don't know why you'd compromise. Buy a couple cheap NIC cards since the speed difference (imop) between a top of the line card and a basic 10/100 card is negligable. If possible buy one of those packages that includes a couple NIC cards, the hub, and the cables.

Nullmodem(Eng)/Nollmodem(Swe), it´s a cable you use to connect two computers using their serial(paralell?) ports.

Well, I have this cable already and it will take a couple of weeks before I buy some networkcards...
It´s just a temporary solution.
SOL! Do I need a hub!?
I thought I only needed two networkcards and a cable to connect 2 computers...no?

NullModem(without modem 'eng') - serial to serial cable, speed 512kb/s (if your lucky), just about fast enough for gameplay, but not much else.

Netowrking 2 home pc's can be done with or without a hub, a hub, does simplfy adding more pc's at a later date.
If you don't use a hub then you'll need to use a 'crossover' cable (where the pinouts swap at each end) otherwise it won't work. (a hub does this for you anyway) best cable to use is probably Cat5e with the 568b pinouts.
NIC's cost about $5 for the really cheap ones, but i'd recommend spending about $15 for a reasonable 10/100 card.
make sure that the hub supports dual speed as well, otherwise you'll be ruinning at 10mb/s instead of 100mb/s.

Okey...so how do I do to be lucky then?
512Kb/s, that´s quite fast anyway.

Go buy you cable then plug the 2 computers together.

I’m not much help for configuring them to work. I tried years ago for a couple of days before I finally gave up and bought some network cards. And yes it is possibly to play games. That was my whole intent.

Or if your NICs have the facility, you can have BNC (10base2?) cabling with terminators. Nice and cheap for long distances, pointless otherwise.

I'm not even sure if some of the more newer games even support null modem connections. Almost everything sings TCP/IP. Overall it'd be wiser to just get two NICs and a crossover cable for now. Even when you eventually get a hub and normal twisted pair cables, the crossover one can be handy for testing things. If you get null modem cables and stuff, it will almost definitely be useless after you setup a full net. Besides, in some cases, the nullmodem cable itself can be almost as expensive as two NICs and a Twisted pair cable.

As I said earlier, I already own a cable and yesterday night I
desided to test my luck and connect my fresh computer with
my older one.

Windows kept moaning about sharing files and user profiles,
Crying out loud, all I want is to attach one simple cable between two
computers and then be able to send/recieve files, I don´t care about
who has the rights to see files or delete them, it´s only me who will use
the computers anyway.
And, a friend of mine tried to connect 2 computers with a null modem a couple
of years ago, it worked fine.
Well, it didn´t work in windows, but games worked excellent, Starcraft among
others...

I´ll try to tweak it further when I get home later today...it better work  , or else...

The cable will work for games like starcraft and diablo, but beyond that I didn't find much so I got myself a hub and cards. It was also incredibly slow for file transfers.

What OS are you using? If you have WinXP, getting the network going is really easy. Just set up a home or small office network on both computers, set your internet preferences and you should be ready to go in less than 5 minutes.

Had Win95 nic 10/100 -- hub -- Win98 nic 10/100. Worked fine.
Now have same except both Win98.
Have neighborehood network installed on both, file and printer sharing protocol, set DD or folders as ''shared'' in properties. For games IPX protocol is often used.
Trick: Use ''net diag'' from a dos window to see if your pcs are ''talking'' together. If you get a no communications result, your cabling or cards are unproperly installed.
Red Alert 2 and Quake 2 are fun in a LAN. Not too demanding, p-2 300 64 ram are enough :-)

I use both Win98 & WinXP.

WinXP for applications of various sorts and Windows98 purely
for "pleasure"...

What is that saying again?
"Even the best can make mistakes", errr...

Well, anyway...I just slaughtered a computer at my job and found an old network card.
There are 3 ports on it, and I can´t figure out what their function are, anyone care to explain?

One of em´ looks like a midiport, just a little smaller.
Then we have another one that looks like a tiny tv-antenna connector.
And at last, the one I figure to be the "real" network connector, looks like an USB port or something.

But don't listen to us blabering on about good 10/100 nics and hubs no no you go and have fun with that nice old network card you have and find a second at a flea market and have fun, stay in touch. Have fun.

Always.
Sometimes, when I´m in an extra good mood that is, I use to comb it in various psychadelic patterns.
The ladies just can´t resist a well combed and good looking chest with small drops of sweat at strategic spots.

Try it, you wont be dissapointed.

I new it would come to this, there´s not a single thread ever that have managed to stay on topic.
Lol.
Well, here´s an update for you who are interested in my null modem adventures.
I enabled the com ports in BIOS and tried one more time to get the connection to work properly.
Did it work? take a guess.

Ofcourse it didn´t work.
"Oh, I´m sorry but I can´t make a connection with the guest computer, try later..."
Wtf!
Ofcourse, how stupid of me...perhaps my computer change his mind later and somehow decides to be kind and make it work.
I´ll just sit and wait for a couple of minutes then it will work automatically, for sure.

I agree wholeheartedly with that kind of logic.
Silly Windows.

Stubborn as I am I decided to try to connect the computers via multiplayer in Warcraft and ColinMcRae.
It worked...more or less anyway.

Warcraft had no problems, ColinMcRae had problems.
It was so annoyingly slow that I freaked out and got a spasmatic attack on my livingroom floor.
When I came to my senses I made a promise to myself to never ever use a null modem cable again.

Nuke you, Nuke me, Nuke it together, naturally.

Reply to Jake75

I must say I too have noticed that windows would rather make you wait for five ten mintues then try again rather than change half your settings to make it work. My dad keeps say "Try it again it might work this time" - Like, HELLO!!!, the whole reason it won't work is cos it aint setup right. If it ain't working you gotta change something, not try again in a few minutes after windows has automatically reconfigured itself specially for you.

I get a new car - you seem to try and diss it as much as poss, I stick my name on the front page - you imedietly bump it all down - how many users are doing this - you are the only one who has a problem with this.

Its everything to do with you - You made up lies telling Kate that my bro was cheating on her. That was an outright lie and I have a good mind to let your g/f know what you're really like. Maybe I should - but I can't be bothered - you;ve caused a lot of stress recently - I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but it's getting harder and harder to do this.
I know the full story - I always do - You and my bro arn't the only people who I talk to ya know.

You wern't dissing it cos you were suspicous - you were completly taken in. I know when you are suspicious - and you wern't - you've never been able to hide what your thinking - I can read you like a book I know when you're lying, when you're upset and when your happy.
