1. "The Internet is powered by open source."
2. "The Internet is the carrier for open source."
3. "The Internet is also the platform through which open source is developed."
4. "It's simply going to be more secure than proprietary software."
5. "Open source benefits from anti-American sentiments."
6. "Incentives around open source include the respect of one's peers."
7. "Open source means standing on the shoulders of giants."
8. "Servers have always been expensive and proprietary, but Linux runs on Intel."
9. "Embedded devices are making greater use of open source."
10. "There are an increasing number of companies developing software that aren't software companies."
11. "Companies are increasingly supporting Linux."
12. "It's free."

12 reasons why open source will not suceed

1. developers will become frustrated with users not puting in, and the lack of developer numbers
2. open source is being twisted towards proprietry, (photoshop, games, etc.. on linux therefore compeating with gimp etc...)
3. with greater popularity comes more enemys, therefore hacking etc...
4. legeslation against open source, or for business (for economy purposes) will disadvantage open source
5. Warez (free and good, or FREE wink wink and fantastic)
6. microsoft (virus's)
7. suport
8. law suits
9. money (open source relys on money still, this is through donations, and many linux distros have gone bankrupt)
10. co-ordination (currently and i see in the future too, little co-ordination between developers leaving many things likea patchwork of crap.
11. china (lack of control and china don't mix)
12. food (everyones gotta eat even coders)

BTW i agree open source will suceed IMO, and i certainly hope so.

However there are these HONEST concerns of mine, while some may see them as an advantage i see them as also being concerns.

1. Linux has split off into many distros, the most popular and ultimatly the best for new users/ broad range of users are costly to buy, or hard to access without buying. (namly SUSE, can't just downlaod ISO's)

2. Propriety software has gone to Linux, some would say this is great as its being recognised, but to be honest "how popular is GIMP on windows?" photoshop for linux has the potential to hurt GIMP's reign, as a designer i am glad PS is on linux (is it there already might be soon if not) but i also fear the gimp won't become cooler than it.

proprietry software also scares me because how do we know its gonna behave, and if the compnays will behave. it really shatters the aura of "free, and exciting" that linux has gained.

3. Money. i have donated to an open source group. however i have seen many that look under funded etc...

but i definatly think there are enough coders that do it as a hobby for open source to exist.
but can capitalist america let in a comunist idea without problems?

p.s. i have WinXP as well as linux, i use WinXP 100% of the time due to 5.1 channel sound issues in liunx. however ALL of my software is 100% free and open source.
