I'm looking to build a system for the first time and have come up with this:

SOLTEK SL-75DRV5
AMD Athlon XP 1800+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL
Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 256mb CAS2.5
MAXTOR Quiet Drive 60GB 7200RPM Model # 6L060L3 -D740X OEM
Hercules Fortissimo II
Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Model LNE100TX
Lite-On 16x DVD Model LTD-163 Black
*BLACK* PANASONIC 1.44 MB DENSITY FLOPPY DISK DRIVE
Silver Chieftec Server tower DX-01SLD w/420w power supply

I have a gf2 GTS video card (will upgrade this later), speakers, monitor, mouse and keyboard.
OS will be 98se.

price from Newegg.com is $553. Trying to stay under $550.

What do you guys think? Any recommendations? Is this an easy system to put together for a first timer?

Thanks,

Chris

I just built my first system and it was pretty simple if you know what goes where.. Let me give you a quick tip though.. when you take the processor out of that packaging, be sure not to grip it too hard.. I did and bent a couple of pins... not good. Anyway it looks like you've got a good system going. Are you going to overclock?

Time is the best teacher... unfortunatly, it kills all of its students.

Mnx4,

Thanks for the advice. I probably will not overclock right away. If I do I will get a better heatsink and fan for the cpu.

If you are playing games on it then its fine. If you are only writing letters on it then it is a bit of an overkill.

The only thing I would worry about is damaging the components with static electricity.

Its impossible to plug the wrong component into the wrong whole so don't worry about that too much. (Except PS/2 keyboard/mouse) - just follow the manual that came with the motherboard.

The only thing that could potentially go tits-up are card conflicts. But its unlikely in this P&P day and age.

regards, McEwin.

Advice....don't do anything without reading through the mobo book.....it should only take an hour or so, but you'll learn a lot quickly. Good luck.

I might suggest that you get a mobo with a kt266a chipset and some decent pc2100 ram insted of pc2700. pc2100 is much cheaper, but make sure that it is cas2.0 or c2.

Other than that, it sounds pretty good.
