Radio Shack

I am getting ready to switch from Cingular to Verizon. I have a Radio Shack
that sells Verizon within walking distance while the Verizon company store is a
drive to get to. Anyone have experience in dealing with Radio Shack for Verizon
service & phones? Is it worth going to the company store over Radio Shack?
Thanks!

Sorry no experience with Radio Shack, but I would not consider Verizon if it
were free.

We have Cingular on one phone. T-Mobile on a business phone and Verizon on
wife's phone.
Verizon my advertise "can you hear me now?" - but they don't back that. In
fact we have contacted Verizon customer service by 3 different emails, 2
phone calls to CS and then snail letters to CS and copy President. It has
been over 3 weeks and we still do not have a response from either method of
contact.

Verizon's customer service, once you sign the contract, is 0 on a scale of 1
to 10.

Good Luck !

I think this is untrue. I've always had immediate and thorough response
from customer service by dialing *611.

Just out of curiosity, what is/are the problem(s) you had with Verizon?

At the risk of sounding like I've been drinking Verizon Wireless
Kool-aid... ;)

I've always, always been impressed with VZW customer service, either
on the phone or in person at the company store. It has been so GOOD
that I am actually amazed.

They are always quick to answer, always have a friendly tone, and work
hard to make sure they can help you. I've never had an unresolved
issue, either.

When I got my first full-month bill, it was *well* above what I'd
expected. It turns out my major problem was that I was going by the
*MIN count of my minutes used...but the vast majority of my use in
that time was roaming (on network or within AC) or data usage (I was
out of the state a good part of the month). I was unaware that *MIN
would not reflect that usage to any degree, at least until a few days
later, and I thought I was within my 800 minutes in my AC 800 plan at
the end of the month.

Despite the fact that I could have probably figured this out on my
own, they sympathized with me and gave me a $50 credit that month.
They didn't have to do that.

Not my experience. CS has always been good to me.

That has not been my experience. They have always been very helpful and I
almost never lose a call with verizon. My experience with verizon had been
much better than my experience with cingular.

My parents got verizon phones and had the same thing happen the first month.
The credit they got was for $100 plus another adjustment for switching to a
plan with more minutes. Verizon CS even did it retroactively for them.

I can't agree but don't claim I haven't had grief.

In general, the best provider seems to be the one with the best real
coverage in areas one frequents. For me, that's Verizon hands down.

- Have I had nasty billing and technical issues with Verizon and had
Verizon not wanting me to speck with somebody that knows anything about
the issue - yes.

- Have I had a problem I eventually could not resolve - no.

- Do I call different reps and supervisors till I get the answer I need -
yes.

Real coverage is #1. That avoids all sorts of issues. It's also the
hardest data to get.

The area I live in has much better reception with Verizon. My Cingular phone
will not pick up in my house and they tell me reception would be worse changing
over to their GSM phone. I am going with Verizon but am not sure about buying
from Radio Shack.

Whether RS or Verizon, you can try out a phone for up to 14 days WITHOUT
canceling your other phone. Get one and make sure it works the way you want
it BEFORE you cancel your other phone.

Radio Shack is a re-seller. I would spend the time and effort to
identify warranty issues and contract specifics.

Radio Shack is an AGENT, not a "reseller".

But, it is almost always better to deal direct with a company when possible,
than go through a 'middle man'. I'd bet the training level is higher direct and they
also have immediate access to the billing system for questions, etc...

Not sure what you're saying 'thanks' for as most of responses (except
Slope's) were all to the first reply to your message and that being about
Verizon customer service.

Well, I can't give an opinion about the Verizon stores as I've bought many
phones and have never bought at a company store (once from Verizon over the
phone, tho). I've never had problems when buying phones from other
resellers. However, I've only bought from large resellers (Best Buy, Circuit
City, etc.) not from independent shops. My most recent purchase last month
was an LG VX6000 and the only reason I bought at that time was because
Circuit City had it for $150 with a $50 Verizon rebate and an $100 Circuit
City rebate (and I've received both rebate checks in less than 4 weeks). The
Verizon store here had it for $130 with the $50 Verizon rebate ($80 after
rebate) so I saved $80 by buying the same phone from CC. It was a little
hassle getting it activated at CC as they had problems with VZW's activation
computer that day, but we eventually got it going at the store by calling
VZW.

I assume Radio Shack shouldn't be any problem either so I wouldn't hesitate
buying there if that's more convenient/cheaper for you. The phones are still
supported by VZW so it shouldn't make any difference since RS is an
authorized reseller.

Not a problem with warranty issues. I returned my old Samsung that I bought
from RS to VZ and they replaced it with no questions.

Sorry, but there is limited coverage on the Moon and Mars. I forget which
planet you said you were from. Everyone here on Earth gets perfect coverage
everywhere. You should consider coming to the planet Earth. Verizon is the
Best! Well, at least according to all Humans, Plants and Animals.
Can you here us now?!
Great!

Best advice on the thread.....

If you buy directly from the carrier, it eliminates the "it's not our
fault" finger pointing between the agent/reseller/phone store and the
carrier.....

YOUR phone on YOUR system is broken. Fix it and my payment will be
forthcoming. Simple and to the point.....

Well, I would not recommend Cingular GSM in the DC area. I get no signal
in my home area and if I do manage to get a call it gets dropped within 2
mins. I am considering changing to Verizon because I am tired of paying
cingular for bad service. Just my 2 cents.

Without giving out you whole address, where in the DC area are you located?
In DC proper or MD/VA areas?

Just curious.

Everyone needs and backgrounds will be different. I have Verizon on two
phones, T-Mobile and SprintPCS and they all have their strengths and
weaknesses.

Overall, If I had to pick one out of all of the carriers in Wash DC, it
would be Verizon.

Model and type of phone makes a big difference. So far I can get better
reception than my friends phones with my Startacs,
RS is usually higher priced than anyone else. I would go online as my first
choice, and 2nd choice would be to get phone off of e-bay and 3rd choice
would probably be to go into store and know what you want before you get
there. ( spend some online time looking at the specs ).

my .02 anyway..... ;-)
