First off it has to be from Dell.
Why?
Because it will be purchased by my employer.
Dell has the EPP which is the employee purchase program.
Right now I have a Inspiron 4000 with a 700MHz Celeron. I bought it a year ago and I was never pleased with it completely.
Should I go for the Inspiron 8100 series with a mobile PIII or should I wait a while for the mobile P4 systems?
Right now I have a plain jane laptop that I pull out to use when my wife is on desktop. It has a 24X cd rom in it. I would like to get a laptop with a combo burner DVD drive in it. I would bring the laptop to work so that when I get bored I can pull it out and watch movies.
That's what I said I want to buy a new laptop so I can watch movies at work.
So my main question is...do I buy a PIII or do I wait a while and get a P4???
I thought you needed a babe on the top of your lap!
I guess Dell are good, dont go for Compaq, especially the budget Presario. I recemmended it to a friend, and when he got it, I thought of killing myself! After spending a fortune on it (yes, Rs.85,000 ~ $2000 is a lot of money in India about 5 months of ones salary) what he got was a Pentium-III 850 MHz on a VIA PLE133 board! Integrated display is fine, but I'd honestly expected a much better board.

I tend to stay away - once a company gets a bad name I prefer to stay with others - it's just a shame you can't do laptops DIY style like desktops - this would be so much better.

Thats the problem - Building your own deszktop is cheaper than OEM but it seems to be the other way round for laptops. Shame really I could make a kick ass laptop.

Business ones, the Armada models cost twice as much! I guess the ACi (a UK based company) makes pretty goos ones, especially at real budget prices! But nothing can beat the Compaq global warranty. But if something is broken they rip you off to fix it!

It has to be from Dell because my employer has a contract with Dell. I can get a sweet laptop for about 40% off the online price.
I just don't know what to do.
Should I order a PIII 1.13GHz or 1.2GHz model or should I wait for the P4 models to be available through the PPP (partnership purchase program)?
I think the P4 will have a better multimedia performance over the PIII.
I'm not to worried about the price.
I have heard the P4 mobiles are using the mobile 845DDR chipset. And Dell likes to use the Mobility Radeon series.
A P4 1.6GHz with 256MB of PC2100 and a Mobility 7500 would be a kick asss laptop.
You could be using it while you're waiting for the P4's to come out.
Depends on exactly what kind of *work* you're going to be doing, too. Working on nailing that last little ba$tard in Max Payne requires slightly different hardware specs, as compared to working on rendering that 3d graph for the presentation tomorrow.
The P4m are out but they not available through the Partnership Purchase Program through Dell and my employer.
Soon possibly this Monday.
But they do seem a little pricey. I think I'll be waiting a few months to see what happens with the prices.
