okay... this is annoying.

using win2k, i was copying some stuff off a CD in my pioneer 106S dvd drive when i noticed everything else was going sluggish. hmmm.

so i checked out the device manager, and sure enough, something was wrong.

ive got 2 devices on my secondary ide channel,
the ata66 dvd drive as the master, and a plain ata ricoh cd-rw as slave.

the burner was happy, and worked properly, it is set to:
Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current transfer mode: DMA.

but somethings up with my dvd
transfer mode: DMA if available
current transfer mode: PIO

ive tried changing the setting, and it didnt change to dma.
i even tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling, no joy. still stuck on Damn PIO.

whats with it? a couple of weeks back it was fine!

Delete the IDE controllers from Device Manager and restart. The problem should then be fixed after it redetects the controller.

finally fixed it

had to delete both drives, the secondary controller and reinstall the via 4in1's... but it DID work.

plus i took the opportunity to completely and utterly NUKE two spyware programs lurking on my PC. :smile:

anyone know of a good comprehensive win2k registry optimiser? (preferably free!)

Although it has a lot of good ideas, beer doesn't know anything about computers!!!

Soft is becoming, if it was`nt already, more important than hard. I`v just today installed a popper killer prog for those damn popups that invade your pc at many sites. it`s free and :cool:

I had 22 spyware programs running, deleted them and my computer now runs super fast!

So is spyware something that you get as part of something else you use (media player connecting to its database), or is it more like trojan stuff?

Depends on who you talk to. It's like a trojan, but doesn't give other people access to your system, instead it simply follows your usage patterns and so forth. I was kind of wondering why the sudden flood of certain types of adds were showing up in my mail box, a spyware could allow them to see where you go (including your email address when you open email I suppose) and set up adds for you.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

spyware can take many forms... some just litter your screen with popups, others, such as realplayer networks, actually sends back info about what you download.

i really disagree with them on many levels.
they slowmy computer down
hop memory
make it slower to run & bootup
are installed without my knowledge or consent
possible show others what is private info.

thus if i cant uninstall it i will got to the extent of rebooting in command prompt mode and pysically deleting the offending directory, shortcuts and registry entries.
