Welp, I was due for an upgrade, and per Verizon I had a hundred dollar
credit so I went in and snagged an SE47 for free (okay, so I sold my
soul to them for another 2 years to get it).

With my old QCP3035, if I was running low on battery, all I had to do
was plug in the phone to its AC adapter and I was able to use the
phone. I found out the hard way that I can't do that on the SE47...
mid-conversation, I thought I could plug in and continue talking, but
the phone would not let me call out even though the battery was dead
and the AC adapter was plugged in.

The manual states on page 1, "You must have at least a partial charge
in the batery to make or receive calls, regardless of whether the AC
adapter is connected to the phone." In other words, I can't plug in
to the AC or even the car adapter and talk, unless the battery has
some charge to it.

Is there a way around this? I'd REALLY hate to think that I'm stuck
with a phone that's non-functional when the battery's dead even though
I could just plug the thing in. What's the point of limiting
functionality like this? What are my alternatives? Would the
TXTVL10040 rapid travel charger remedy this? Should I return it? Are
all the more recent Kyocera phones limited in this way?

Thanks In Advance!

Have you tried plugging it into a car adapter charger? You may be able to
get a faster charge with that, enough to continue talking.

One thing. With a two year contract being a long time,
based on my past experience, don't fool around with a
phone that you aren't happy with because that return time
period will evaporate and you're stuck for two years or
a heavy charge for getting out of contract. The difference
between the cost of a phone for one vs two years is about
$30.00. I would try another phone. Luck

I've had several phones which were like this. The truth is that the "house"
chargers don't put enough current into the phone to charge it and use it at
the same time. Basically, when it's plugged in and you use the phone, you
are working on battery power, not the house juice. Someone else here
suggested using a rapid car charger; that is correct and will work. It's
not just the Slider, but many phones have this drawback...well, the CHARGER
actually probably has the drawback. If you could somewhere find a rapid
house charger, that would work too.

I was wondering about the charger type. I didn't remember buying a
travel charger for my QCP3035, even though that's what I'd been using.
Apparently the 3035 came with a travel charger standard, rated at 4.2V
DC, 1.0A. The SE47 comes with a bulky adapter rated at 5.2V DC,
400mA.

What is odd is despite that the 3035's documentation states,
"Note--You must have at least a partial charge in the battery to make
or receive calls, regardless of whether or not the travel charger is
connected to the phone," I was still able to remove the battery and
use the phone to make/receive calls.

I still have the original packaging for my SE47 and the receipts, and
a few more days left to be able to return the phone for another. I'll
snag a travel charger for it tomorrow. If that doesn't work, the SE47
and accompanying paraphenelia will have to go back.

Any recommendations on alternate phones under $100 with a decent
amount of talk time, reasonable sized displays (I like the SE47
display as a minimum) and an easy to use address book?

TIA!

But, I'm assuming his $100 credit is from the New Every 2 program, and
IIRC, that requires signing a 2 year contract to redeem. If he only
signs up for one year, he probably can't get the credit, so it would
be $130 more. I hope I'm wrong; someone please correct me if I am.

Thank you for contacting Kyocera Wireless Customer Care. We apologize
for the inconvenience you are experiencing.

The battery will not charge during an active call while a charging
accessory is attached, once your phone returns to stand-by mode, the
charging process will resume. The Travel Charger gives off a
"trickle"
charge that is not powerful enough to allow charging and talking at
the
same time. However, the car power adapter uses a "rapid" charge and
this
will allow extended speaking while plugged up to the charger.

Kyocera Wireless Corp. consistently strives towards improving the
features and performance of our products. Thank you for taking the
time
to forward us your suggested enhancement request. We appreciate your
valued feedback.

For further clarifications and assistance feel free to get back to us.

Same here. That line in the 3035's manual is bunk. I can let my 3035
die completely to the point where it shuts itself down. I can then
plug it into the home charger and immediately begin making and
receiving calls. In testing, I've had to run several 3035s without
batteries, just using the charger to power them, and they all worked
fine (well, except for the reboots, but that's a software issue).

Thanks to everyone who recommended getting the Travel Rapid Charger--
it does the trick, just like the Travel Charger from my old 3035. I
can even take out the battery from my SE47 and talk on the phone with
the Travel Charger plugged in :) Works great! :)

Circuit City has all their phones that sell for $180 or less at free
after rebate this week. I got an LG VX6000 there a month ago and got two
rebate checks in less than 4 weeks. It has a good TFT display and decent
amount of talk time. I use the address book, but don't know what your
reference is for easy to use. You might want to check them out. You get
the same 14 day trial period, but you'd have to sign up for new service
on the phone. Depends on how tied you are to your current plan and number.

Didn't a previous post say there was a significant in the juice supplied
by the regular travel charger and the rapid car charger (the home charger
would be rapid too)?

Then it might make a difference what kind of signal you're getting.
Remember that RF Tx is reduced the "closer" you get to the tower.
The regular travel charger might provide enough juice to make calls
in a good signal are but not in a bad signal area? The manual is going
to address the worst case. Weakest OEM charger and worst conditions.

just speculating,

Yes, but the output of the 3035 home charger is about on par with many
of the rapid car chargers. The home charger for the SE47 obviously
wasn't intended to be as robust as the one for the 3035. If my 3035
is completely dead, I can plug it in to my home charger and it is
sufficient to power the phone in use (and I'm in a weak signal area)
while recharging the battery at the same time.

QCP3035 comes standard w. a Travel Charger rated:
4.2 Volts DC 1.0 Amps
P=VI = 4.2 * 1.0 = 4.2 Watts

SE47 comes standard w. an adapter rated:
5.2 Volts DC 400milliAmps (ie. 0.4 Amps)
P = VI = 5.2 * .4 = 2.08 Watts... half the power of the 3035's charger

Verizon's SE47 Rapid Travel Charger model TXTVL10034 rated:
4.5 Volts DC 1.5Amps
P = VI = 4.5 * 1.5 = 6.75 Watts

I don't get why they decided to bundle the lamo adapter with the SE47
instead of a travel charger... other than to make a buck. I paid $30
for the TXTVL10034 Rapid Travel Charger for my SE47 at the Verizon
store. You can save about $10 more than I did by shopping online for
the Rapid Travel Charger model TXTVL10040.

Good Luck. :)

I'll definitely keep that in mind if I decide to move on to the SE47.
Thanks.
