More Information

recently i've just obtained my GA-7vrxp, i bought it due to the high recommendation from this site..

been using it for 2 weeks, then the problems began,

i get my very first blue screen of death from my XP.. wow..

within 2 days, i've gotten like 4 blue screens and by the 4th one, after i have to reboot,
i get this error message.

windowsXP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

first i tried the solution given by microsoft's knowledge base, (Q307545) but the problem remained,

then i reinstalled my windows, problem is still there,

then i formated my hard drive, and reinstall windows,
the problem is still there...

now.. i've just reformated my harddrive for the 5th time in 2 days, *cross my fingers* that the problem will be gone..

anyone facing this problem also??

here's my config

cpu :Athlon XP 1700
mobo :GA-7VRXP
ram :768mb ddr pc2100
video :MSI TI200 Gforce 3 64mb
sound : sblive plat
hdd : western digital 120gb with 8mb cache
OS : WinXP pro

anyone facing the same problem? if you need more specs, just let me know

formating the hd, seems to solve the problem temp only, but i'd like to solve the problem perm, so that i don't need to reformat & reinstall windowsXP every 5 hours.. or so..

Hi,actually I also consider to buy this Gigabyte mobo. Is this all problem related to the mobo or others? How much you brought for the mobo?

thanks..

they have good prices..

an update on my mobo,

now i try to reinstall windowsXP, but it won't even allow me to do that, i keep getting blue screen and fatal errors either while installing windows or before installing windows and after formating my hd..

some of the blue screen says,
there's somethign wrong with my bios , hardware..

How you install ur Win XP ??
I dont think it's the mobo's problem.
I think i had the same problem like urs b4, my solution is dont install Win XP from DOS ( dont use the 5 Win XP setup floppy disks ). Install ur XP from win ME, which's install the ME first and then Win XP, this will solve the problem i think.
I dont know why, it's really strange to intall the XP from DOS, sometimes i couldn't load the file while installing, or sometimes files are missing ??!!

Good luck

what brand of RAM? What speed? Did you try it with only one stick? Have you eased off on the memory timings?

Ive had similar problems when using this board, but only when I use multiple dimms, try taking out all memory but one dimm (Im assuming you have a 256 and a 512mb since you said you had 768mb memory) and see if that fixes it, if you havent done so yet, reset your bios settings, and update your bios.

I am currently experiencing this problem using memory from OCZ. I had to clock the memory down to 266 Mhz and a latency of 2 to resolve the issue.

This sucks cause i purchased this board and memory to pick up the performance of the 333/2.

I don't know if it is the mainbord or the memory, but I have never used Gigabyte before and I usually only use Crucial ram. I am leaning that way again.

i know this might sound silly but do you have RAID set up? if you do that could be the problem. ANother thing is you got a crappy sound card.

I took out my sound blaster Live! 5.1 sound card out and i'm no longer having problems. Well so far anyway. I took both RAID out and the sound card and so far after one day i'm problem free. cross my fingers.

<Added>
first i was getting BSOD (blue screen of death) and i had RAID going ok. now i reinstalled windows twice with RAID and both times it crashed. I took out raid and no more BSOD. But now i was getting crashes. no BSOD. whatever game i was running it would just crash into windows. One time jedi outcast totally crashed windows XP and it forced me to shutdown. Took out the sound card. No more game crashes. I'm using the built in sound now. works better then the sound blaster believe it or not.
<end>

So the Promise RAID controller is crap. ANd the live card is crap.

thats the problem.

<forgot to mention>
i'm using the ga-7dxr and i was having the same problems you were. Sounds like a gigabyte issue or it's the combination of the crappy promise controller and the crappy sound card.

this board is a piece of junk, I've been messing around with it for well over a month now.. and I can't get it to run stable on anything but +10% vcore....

I swear Gigabyte better release rev2.0 soon, so we can all RMA these back, and Gigabyte can take them and use them for strongest men competitions...

What is the memory timings and have you updated your BIOS? Also if your using sound card, make sure the onboard sound chip is disabled in BIOS and don't load the drivers for it.

Crap, all the good ones are already taken.

Teikoshen,

Your problem may be due to the size/quality of your PSU. I too was suffering BSOD and also got a corrupted system file. You can read all about it in my <A HREF="http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=16034" target="_new">thread</A> at the VIA Arena Forums.

I fixed alot of my problems by replacing my 300W with an Enermax 431W.

Gigabyte GA-7VRXP, Rev 1.1, Lot# 2K3047D (Bios F4) VCORE +7.5%
Enermax EG465AX-VE(W) FCA 431W (220W combined on +5V, +3.3V)
Athlon XP 1900+
Stock HSF
Kingston 512MB DDR PC2700 NP CL2.5 (KVR333X64C25512)
MSI GeForce4 4400, AGP 1x
Maxtor 60GB, 7200rpm
Philips PCRW404 CDRW
Windows XP Pro

wow.. i gotta tell you ugys.. i'm surprised that my post is still being replied till now :) haha..

but i really appreciate all your replies :)

just an update on my comp

now it's running pretty stable.. i run around 2-4 days before i do a restart on my comp.. usually it's because cable is down or i just tweaked my comp a bit that's why.

but i haven't had any blue screen ever since..

what's the cure?

well just as Yamaca has pointed out.. upping your VCORE to +7.5% helps a lot.. if you have a good cpu fan.. you might wanna go as far as +10%

i've read in one ofthe via forums that gigabyte acknowledged that the vrxp motherboard has problems with GF3 and GF4 card and upping your vcore helps in these situations..

though my problem ain't really a video card problem.. coz i don't get glitches and such..

but that +7.5% thing really helped.

another side note..

i vaguely remember that someone mentioned that vrxp had problems with some ram sticks.. not too sure..
anyone can confirm with this?

why i ask?

coz. i have 3 x 256mb pc2100 rams in my comp..
2 of it is from crucial.. both are the newer ones (1 year old or so)
the other one is older, i think generic also..

problem is.. nowadays when i boot up my comp.. or just check under system info, it says i have 640ram only..
that would mean i have 2x256mb + 1x128mb of ram..

all 3 of my ramsticks are pc2100,
2 of them are from crucial i know.. the other i'm not sure..

so i'm guessing the other one is either 'broken' or just doesn't go well with this mobo..

another situation was that.. i just had a blue screen today, after around 1 monnth since i had my major break down, the same situation happened.

funnything was that.. one of the boot ups i saw my total ram (at the first page of the boot up) as 768mb, but at that boot up, my system crashed and gave me the 'system file missing' error

i boot up again, and this time.. the ram went back to 640mb, and everything was back to normal.. no more problems or glitches..

i didn't tweaked anything.. simply only pressed the reboot button.

weird...

here's my system speck
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP Rev1.1 Bios F4 Vcore +7.5%

Yeah,

I had that prob with my Gigabyte mobo and my xp 1700. My original 256 stick of PC2100 RAM posts at 128 also. (weird) Also, it boots OK alone but only posts 128MB. I'm transferring my other 2 Crucial 256MB to my soon to be built P4 machine. Too many flakey probs with AMD's XP processors, both s/w and h/w. This will be my first Intel box since Pent 133!!

Good luck to all.
