No, nothing. Drive just chugs along through the 3rd CD and then stops. No activity - on the CD or HD. No prompts. Just nothing. System remains responsive and I can cancel, it uninstalls the portion that did make it.
I seem to recall having similar problems with other games and am suspecting my sound card drivers. It's an Audigy 2 ZS and it's given me problems before. I will try to update its drivers (though I am 99% sure doing so in the past had no effect. In fact I don't remember how I overcame this problem before - though it was with HL2, not this app.
That really sounds like a problem with your CD drive. Since you ruled out a defect CD (no scratches and fat stains, right?), I suspect either a badly burned CD (happens sometimes - even with retail game discs) or your CD (or DVD) drive is getting sloppy.
Things you can do:
If the CD is dirty; forget the cloth and breath trick. Just take it to the sink, wet the CD and your hands, take a lot of soap and gently rub the disc; the soap will prevent scratching it. Just be nice to the disc. Dry it with a clean towel. GENTLY. Just tap it dry. Use toilet paper if necessary(not the fattening and scentenig kind; did I mention that you have to be nice to the disc?).
If that don't help try another drive. Network mount it if necessary.
