Anyone know of any good reviews comparing the picure quality of the 18" NEC LCD1800 ($1700) with that of the LCD1810x ($2300) (or for that matter reviews on either one)

I think that NEC flat panel monitors are probably the best as far as quality, but I would also like any and all opinions on this. I'm going mostly by spec info rather than first hand experience. Thanks.

...or the Viewsonic VG181 which seems to be better in some regards and also cheaper ($1700 with analog and digital).

(buying a new monitor is the only time when being in the boonies where there aren't any stores displaying them makes it difficult).

I looked at many lcds prior to buying and found that viewsonic (vp181) is by far the best, and feature (pixel size, color, contrast)wise, NEC to be the worst by some margin.

I have someone I work with, that owns the NEC 21", and it is ugly!! he also has a 15" nec, and it is nice but no digital connects.

I have an SGI 1600sw, and the viewsonice vp181, I could not be happier with the 2 of them, go with the viwsonic and get a video card to drive it in digital mode.

I'm trying out the Princeton Graph Senergy 750 for the first time right now and I have to side with JG (see Senergy 750 thread). It's a good looking display, with a caveat I'll get to in a second. Response time is better than any of the others I've looked at (VS, Sony, NEC, Samsung); contrast, brightness and colors all look very good. I'm not running a DVI plug right now, though, and I can see some very slight waves moving across the screen and some "jitters." Hopefully that's because of analog interferance and a DVI cable will clear it up (it better). We'll see....

The price is relatively cheap ($1400 at monitoroutlet.com) and the size is only about a 1/2 inch smaller (17.4) than and 18". Once I get my new rig up with the DVI video card I'll let you know if that improves things.

I went ahead and bought the Viewsonic VG181. To put it simply, it is a sweet monitor!

The pictures I've seen of it (had to buy it over the web without seeing it first) do not do it justice. It is thinner than I expected, and the back looks very, very nice. (not that this matters, but I like it a lot more than I expected.)

I just bought a 3D Labs Oxygen VX1 before going for the flat screen, so for now I'm driving the VG181 in analog mode, and still the picture is rock solid and the colors are excellent (though yellow looks a little more orange than on my CRT). Banding is not a problem at all, which I feared, and there are no "waves" at all. Everything is very sharp, and I don't think I'll be able to go back to a CRT again.

The only drawbacks are:
1.) Front of screen is very fragile. Not sure how I'm going to clean it if it gets dirty without worrying about damaging it.
2.) Dragging things quickly causes them to blur seriously, but I have already gotten used to this.
3.) There is one bad pixel in the center of the screen - when you look at black or dark blue, you see one bright green dot. It's a little annoying, and I'm not sure yet if I'll send it back and try for a perfect one.

All in all though, the VG181 is a very nice flat panel monitor.
