The utilities work with a particular chip in the card.
Dell 1150 is rebranded Orinoco and both will work with Netstumbler,
but other Dell card's are different make / chip.

We use Odyssey client from www.funk.com it's a third party client
which works with a whole variety of cards. You still need to load the
card drivers and the client works on top so whichever card you use the
client is the same. We have it working with Cisco, Belkin and Dell
Truemobile cards.

More to do with the chip in the middle.
If the dell card is a rebadged cisco, or orinoco, then
the respective util might work.
as an example of this working,
the utils with any PRism II chipset card work with other brands that
use prism II chipset
There are such 'same chipset'(orinoco chipset) cards, so that might work with the
dell cards...
