Running XP, OE6, McAfee

I just got a new computer with the above. I've had a few bugs, error
messages, etc. and in trying to solve I have been advised not to download
the MS updates as that's where some of the problems come from. This doesn't
seem right to me. At least shouldn't I download the critical updates?
(Exception: I set up McAfee to automatically d/l all updates). What
comments do you have on this? Thanks.

Hello
I recommend downloading all the Critical and Windows XP updates, get any
necessary driver updates from the manufacture of your hardware websites.
MS puts these updates out for security and safety issues.

The MS-MVP's on this site can probably offer more up to date advice.

First off, new computers right out of the box should not
really be "buggy", when assembled by competent OEM's or
builders. If there are "bugs", then there should be patch
kits via cdrom or floppies and the computer should not be
connected to a network or the Internet until the bugs are
resolved. Next, once on the Internet, then the MS critical
updates would be the most important. And lastly, the least
important would be hardware driver updates unless they are
really needed. Our rationale is straight-forward --- deal
with the box first before introducing "unknown" elements
to the problem.

Barb,

Whoever told you not to do the MS updates is nuts. You are right, the
critical ones should ALWAYS be installed, the recommended ones generally are
pick and choose depending on your particular computer and what's installed.
The drivers should only be installed if no drivers available from the
manufacturer of your sound/video card, etc.

Good luck,

Ray
