boot problem

I just added a 512MB DDR module to my SOyo Dragon. when I turned the power on I smelled a chemical smell and the system would not boot. No beeps just fan noise. I tried to take out the new module and reboot but no luck. I am afraid that I somehow fried my cpu in this effort.

any ideas on how to find the root cause?

The smell only comes with the new DDR module in. It will not boot regardless of the memory configuration.

At this point I would remove all non-essential stuff and see if I can get it to come up. IDE cables, floppy cables, basically everything except: Vid card, RAM and CPU. Also clear CMOS once again.

If it still won't POST, the next step would be to try sawpping the 3 items I mentioned above. Probably not do-able unless you've got a computer shop in your basement (like I do ).
