Hi, I am very new to this computer lark, which is a shame because my computer has completely crashed!!! It may have been a new programme I installed, its definately not a virus as I have protection. Anyway, switched on this morning, and it cannot find system files. I have xp home, oem version, so I put the restore cd in, and the only option I can get is 'boot from cd' ( the restore option wont work for some reason) So I am sitting here staring at the msdos command prompt, what on earth do I type! even 'help' is a bad command according to computer! I am using my friends laptop to do this, and she is hopeless too! Help us, before I throw computer through window!!!
Thanks
Tilly

1st, boot into the BIOS and set the CD-ROM drive to boot before the hard
drive does.

Then you need to install the XP CD and reboot, so the system can read the
disk.
Watch the screen closely and when it tells you to hit any key to boot from
the CD, hit Enter.

Go through the Install procedure, after it boots.

Hi, I also had a problem I could not solve on my own.
My cd writer was not recognized by XP home edition.
I posted my problem on Windows XP Hardware newsgroup, got one reply, but I didn't know
how to implement the reply. In desperation I poked around my computer
until I stumbled on Help and Support. I asked for support and in less then 24 hours
they e-mailed a detailed step-by-step procedure, which solved my problem.
Since my knowledge of computers is marginal, at best, it was important for me that the
procedure was very detailed and did not assume that I know anything about computers.

If you would like to get support to solve your problem, left click on:
Start>Control Panel>Help and Support (on left panel)>>Get support (on right panel)>Get help from (on left panel)>>Ask support professional for help (on right panel), then answer a series of questions.

All the best, Adam

Have you ever considered reading up on the basics of computers, or perhaps
even take a computer course? What did you do when you started driving, just
get in the car and go? Everything takes some preparation.

Hi Papa, thanks for your acid reply. It seems you assume that I drive, I dont. You also assume I just went out and bought a computer knowing nothing, I didnt. Of course I read up on computing, of course I have looked into how to operate the things, of course I know the basics, and I know a lot of things about my computer, but unfortunately unlike you,it seems I dont know everything, It doesnt crash every day, so of course I am not experienced at what to do in that situation. Do not assume everyone has the level of expertise you have, no doubt I could teach you lots about other things I know, but then I would do it more politely!

No you don't, or if you do, then why did you ask such a completely newbie
question as "Whats a command prompt???" ?

....and if you do, then why are you using such a backward newsgroup reader as
"Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000"?

It's spelled "etc", not "ect", and "prompt", not "promt". Don't you have a
spell checker?

Look up newsgroup readers sometime (try Google). You will find that almost
anything is better than a web interface, even OE. Sorry if that lost you,
but somehow I'm not surprised.

Lol! it was past midnight when I wrote that, and even if I had noticed the errors, I wouldnt have worried, its a newsgroup, I do have a spellchecker, and use it for important things. Truce? I am sure you are a lovely person, but for some reason I have got your goat lol!
Its a lovely sunny day, laugh a little ;o)

Cheers Shenan, thats very helpfull, and I will read it all. I have mcafee on subscription, so it updates frequently, and the day before I had been to pest patrol site and got a clean bill of health. I also have zone alarm. I am on the symantec site now looking up the error message I get when I try to repair, and its getting a bit deep now, but I have all day to try and fix it! I get 'Application error 29005' on the symantec ghost as it tries to restore windows xp, I will try and do what it is suggesting, but its losing me a bit!
Thanks all for your suggestions, very helpful.
Thanks
Val
