Random Hanging

why does my computer suddenly hang when i just browse through my desktop or when i open some programs? the screen just stays there and the mouse doesn't move, no other option but to press restart button.

any thoughts?

my PC is quite new actually. AMD Phenom II X4 2.5 GHz 4gig RAM Geforce Gt240 512mb DDR5

run memtest, and check your HDD for errors.
