It seems that when ever I power up/down, drive A (floppy) is address and
does something. I have put a diskette into the drive but nothing is
written on it. This is not a major problem, but very bugging. Any help
would be welcome.

Your PC automatically scans all drives on startup. This can be disabled for faster performance but will have to be reenabled if you ever need to boot from a floppy. the chance that you are taking there is what if your PC is in such a sorry state that you cannot get in to make it boot from the A: drive.

Norton AV will also scan the A Drive upon shutdown.
This can be reconfigured through options.
