I don't understand why I get such bag ping on online games. When I get my server list, usually the best is often over 100ms. And yet, I've got a 10mbps cable connection and have amazing downstream.

I am guessing it has something to do with either my firewall or my router, but I know nothing about how to modify settings on these to cure the ailment.

I am running the firewall that's a part of Windows Live One Care. I have "unblocked" one game in question - Fear Combat.

I know how to get into my router and change things - I just don't know what I should change.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

which games exactly. some games are fine with high pings some arent.

how far away do you think or know the servers to be.

have you used the tracert function in command prompt to ping a server i.p and get a breakdown of all the hops it takes in between reaching its destination. by hops it means how many servers it passes through to reach its destination.

does anyone else use the line and do you have other downloads/programs using the internet at the same time.

well there is a real easy way to see if it is your firewall....

Disable your firewall briefly and see if you still have high pings.

If you do, then it is obviously not your firewall. If you don't then you know for sure where you need to focus your attention.
