Blue Screen Error

Hello Tom's Hardware Community members,

I am new to discussing computers and the terminology but I will describe my problem as best I can.

-------------------------------------

History:
I have recently purchased components from mwave.com.au and megaware.com.au and built a new home computer. The parts that I bought are

DFI LP DK X58 A
Intel Core i7 930 Socket 1366 LGA 930 @ 2.80 GHz Cores: 4; Threads: 8
DDR3 Triple Channel 1666 6GB
2 Radeon HD 5870 1GB running in crossfire

I also use a LOGITECH G10 Keyboard and a RAZER MAMBA Mouse and am running two BenQ 24inch LCD 2ms Screens as an extended desktop.

I got these specifications from a program called CPUID CPU-Z. If any more details are required I can check my online order forms.

-------------------------------------

Problem:
I am unsure of the initial starting point but whilst playing SC2 and alt+tab to desktop my computer recieved a Blue Screen Error, this has since increased in frequency over the coming days happening while the game was opening and/or closing. The frequency reached maximum about a week after whereby I recieved a Blue Screen Error while opening Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Messenger, when trying to configure the RAZER MAMBA using Razer Configurator, and when doing almost anything. This has since subsided and has returned specifically when playing SC2 i.e. alt+tab and other in-game processes.

After the first few Blue Screen Errors SC2 identified one of its files as corrupt and did some kind of repair.

Each time the Blue Screen Error appears differently but lately I have noticed it say Win32k.sys and MEMORY MANAGEMENT amongst others (maybe 20 different ones?)

-------------------------------------

Attempted Solutions:
When the problem reached highest frequency I realised it was something more serious and began to investigate possible solutions. So far I have attempted to follow online guides and struggled due to my lack of computer knowledge. I have:

*installed all Windows Updates
*used DriverGenius and updated all Drivers
*attempted to use the Windows Maintenance Program where it sends information off and it seems to always fail when connecting to the server
*ran the 'extensive' Windows memory test which I set for 7 loops (no errors found)
*completed a registry clean using CCleaner
*updated and ran anti-virus software
*my PC is not overheating as I am using ANTEC 900 TWO with a ZALMAN CNP9700 Fan on the processor
*updated the firmware on my RAZER MAMBA (mouse and dock)
*typed SFC /SCANNOW in cmd (which said found corrupted files but could not fix)

I may have tried others but cannot remember.

-------------------------------------

What I hope to recieve:
I hope to recieve additional possible solutions to my problem with details on how to achieve what is being proposed as a solution. Please remember my terminology is not strong nor my navigation knowledge.

I appreciate any and all proposed solutions and the time you have given to provide them in detail.

Thankyou

Simon

I have downloaded and installed BlueScreenView from Nrisoft. I am unsure of what information you require. Could you be more specific?

Please remember I am not very strong on computer terminology.

number13,

I think my registry cleaner has deleted some of these dump files. Below are the ones from tonight.

On further investigation I managed to get this program to generate the following:

In the past I have recieved PAGEFILE in NONPAGE AREA, been told PFN List Corrupt, something regarding win32k.sys, and my computer has had to do CHKDSK automatically during some restarts.

Please note, that tonight I have also been recieving not responding messages frequently from Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

Cheers,
Simon

Okay, so whilst sitting here I have had a few more errors, one when I was running anti-virus

And seriously, I have had about 60 Blue Screens :-P

well it seeems that the ntoskrnl.exe file is the problem,
Ntoskrnl.exe is an important system file for the Windows operating system. ntoskrnl.exe (and ntkrnlpa.exe on systems with Physical Address Extension support) is the kernel image for the family of Microsoft Windows NT operating systems. It provides the Kernel and Executive layers of the Windows NT kernel space, and is responsible for various system services such as hardware virtualization, process and memory management, etc., thus making it a fundamental part of the system. It contains the Cache Manager, the Executive, the Kernel, the Security Reference Monitor, the Memory Manager, and the Scheduler, among other things If this file gets deleted or becomes corrupted, a user will not be able to boot his computer until this file is replaced.
I quit running ATI cards long ago because of driver isses, I really do wish they could get the driver issue squared away, they have great H/W, but I am running Nvidia and will continue to do so till their(ATI) driver issues are behind them, as a note: Nvidia have BSOD's as well, very seldom, but they do, I have run 32bit and 64bit Win7 and they both BSOD occaisionally, but if you remove the drivers and the card(not physically) and reboot the computer and let it install everything again, all goes well for a long time
PS: try removing the Catalyst Control Center and run just the drivers and see if makes a difference

Ok. Would reinstalling Windows 7 make a difference?

Also I have downloaded Catalyst 7 and installed it but on restarting computer windows fails and needs to do a system restore. I though that the higher level version may assist. Do you know what could be causing this?

Also I was following this sites guide to Malware and Viruses and decided to delete AVG Free and use Microsoft Security Essentials because I am told that the latter could potentially cause less Blue Screen Errors. Unfortunately MSE fails to install and says it encountered an error. I had this security suite inititally installed but uninstalled it for AVG. Now that I have done the reversal it seems impossible to get it on.

Also, I downloaded Malwarebytes but cannot uninstall it now because apparently the uninstall file is missing.

I do not understand what you mean about removing the centre and reinstalling the drivers... or about removing the drivers and the card (not physically) could you explain this in greater detail?

I am determined to get this fixed as it has really been depressing me and I believe with your help we will.

Cheers,
Simon

btw its strange because since that last Blue Screen my computer is running fine - except for not being able to install MSE and Windows failing when restarting after Cat 7 is installed. The same happened the other night...

I only know that ntoskrnl. exe has a issue with 7, since I am not using ATI, to some degree I am blind, try 10.3, and not 10.4 or 10.5, these are known problems, I'll do some checking and be back in a min
from Guru3d 10.5a and 10.7-7a,7b seem to be the best

I have just installed 10.7... SUCCESSFULLY!!! By uninstalled 10.4 completely. Alright, now are there any scans that I can do or anything you recommend? Is there another possible cause for these blue screens like the ones that ntoskrnl were not the file for?

BTW I am looking at this site that tells me to fix the file that may be corrupt I should do this:

Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file

If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.

1.Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2.Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3.In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4.Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
5.Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
6.You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
7.Type exit to reboot the computer.

But isnt this the same as reformatting?

Do you recommend trying to see if I still get a blue screen with 10.7 installed? Will Blue screen do dmg to my system? btw I just managed to isntalled MSE after downlaoding a 4th copy of the .exe file.... this is very strange

use cccleaner to be sure you got everything, if the BSOD's are not regular, usually not a issue, repetative or constant, yes they can lose windows files that are necessary for Windows to work, if things are glitchy, open the command prompt, Start, Accessories, Command Prompt, right click Run as Admin, type sfc/scannow, it usually comes back ok, but I think it fixes any faults and only reports if it can't fix things

August 14, 2010 1:59:44 PM

yes i noticed that my computer had to rewrite files this morning when i had about 16 blue screens every 3 minutes... my heart was breaking... I will run this sfc/scannow and then I will see if alt+tab in SC2 <--- which is where it all started causes a blue screen. I will let you know promptly after the scan. BTW I really appreciate your help on this issue.

BTW --- so you don't believe that my RAM is broken? Or it is any hardware issue... because this was my main worry --- I was reading in forum after forum saying that my memory must be broken...

What about someting like this??

I manually forward all my mail, I have 10 E-Mail accounts, and I retired a few years ago and use all of this to kill time

So, what exactly is God Mode in Windows 7?

Well, for starters, it's not really a mode. And it's nothing you need to be a deity to pull off, either.

Rather, it's a folder packed with shortcuts to just about every settings change and administrative function in Windows 7. Everything you'll find in the Action Center, Backup and Restore, Autorun, Desktop Gadgets, Devices and Printers -- it's all there. All dumped in one central location for easy access.

No, this trick doesn't involve entering IDDQD in the run box - but it's just about that simple. Here's the magic, as provided by the guys at Windows 7 Themes:
• Create a new folder anywhere (I set mine up in d:\)
• Rename the folder and paste in the following text: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
That's it! You've now got your new, somewhat handy folder. Why somewhat handy? Well, because you can already access everything in there by typing a few letters into the search box on your start menu.
or if you left click on the folder in the left Window pane, it opens all the configureables up

hehe i alrdy had that folder made from ur previous post :)  quite handy - as you dont have to navigate some confusing menus. This patching process is almost complete and hopefully whats installed isnt corrupted and all goes well.... so that I can alt+tab and pray i dont get a blue screen error haha!
