I had the same problem with Madden 07. Same error. I reinstalled DX9.0c to no avail. In a moment of complete desperation, I tried the dumbest idea ever: I copyed the contents of the disc over to a folder on the computer. The result = IT WORKED! I kid you not. I didn't even have to enter my cd-key. Now that's copy protection at it's best.
