I am about to buy some games, and there are alot of First Person shooters out there. I have never really cared for games like Medal of Honor, but with all of the WWII style shooters out, I figured I would give one a shot.

Which one is for me? Some games I enjoy already are Halo and Unreal Tornament, but I love FPS games in general. Good graphics and an awesome story are a must. Multiplayer is really not what I am interested in simply because I already have a slew of Multiplayer shooters.

Off the top of my head, I know that there is Company Heros, Call of Duty 1 and 2, BF2, Brothers in Arms, BF1942, and a bunch more. Any reccomendations?

More about : war shooter

One of my all-time favourite FPS shooters is Aliens vs Predator 2. 8)
Battlefield games don't really have any kind of story, but Call of Duty does.

Company of Heroes isn't an FPS, it's an RTS. It is however a fantastic game if you like the RTS genre.

As for WWII shooters, Call of Duty 1 and 2 are both great. Good story and good action in each. The Battlefield games are a blast to play, but there's no real story since they focus on multiplayer almost exclusively.

I've never played the Brothers in Arms games, but they are suppsoed to be pretty good.

I really like lots of good story, so I may get the Call of Duty warchest.

Also, what is an RTS game, I am not sure. Real Time Strategy? like AOE?

I have narrowed it down to COD and Brother in Arms, since I am mostly interested in Single Player. (I have enough multiplayer shooters)

RTS does stand for Real Time Strategy. And AOE is an example of an RTS.

If the FPS doesn't have to be WWII themed, you should try Half-Life 2, Prey, and Sin Episodes. Those are also good shooters with good stories.

I plan to get HL2 and Prey, hopefully by the time I finish FarCry and Fable, maybe their prices will come down a bit. I have never heard of Sin, I will have to look that one up. Thanks for the recommendations though!

P.S.- I have Half Life one, and enjoy it.

TSIMonster, this is just some free advice from your friendly neighborhood TG editor, but I'd rent Prey. I just played it for an upcoming review for TwitchGuru and I have to say I was extremely disappointed. You could rent the game and finish it in two days.

If it's WWII shooters you're interested in, look no further than Call of Duty 1. One of the finest FPS of all-time. Didn't care for Call of Duty 2 because it was basically a shorter version of CoD1.

Thanks for the advice! There is no where around here that actually rents PC Games, just console games. With this advice, I definately won't drop $50 on Prey, maybe once it comes down to 19.99! 8)

I will probably just get the CoD Warchest thingy, it was pretty cheap, and includes CoD 1, 2 and something else.

What do you guys think about Pariah? I'm still real interested in Brother in Arms too

I would have to recommend the Battlefield games. They are the only games that have really ever had me hooked. They come in all kinds of flavors also.

- WWII
- Vietnam
- Modern Day
- Future Warfare (TBR)

Here's a list of some popular single player FPS shooter games released since 2002: Wolfenstein, Alien vs Predator 2, Unreal 2, Vietcong, Call of Duty, FarCry, Doom 3, Quake 4, Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R.

Wolfenstein has an interesting storyline about nazis and paranormal activities, AvP 2 reminds a lot of the James Cameron's movie Aliens, and in Unreal 2 you are some kind of sheriff patrolling/exploring planets on the border of the galaxy. Call of Duty makes interesting use of computer controlled soldiers and scripts to make the game dramatic. In Quake 4 you also have computer controlled soldiers on many occasions and the game's plot contains one of the most gruesome surprises I've seen in any PC game. In Doom 3 you explore a base on Mars and later literally go to hell, there's also an add-on to it (Resurrection of Evil) with a new weapon and a hellish artifact. In addition to these, there are also some FPS shooters based on Star Wars and now there's even some kind of FPS shooter set in Wild West (Call of Juarez).

Right now I'm waiting for S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Crysis. S.T.A.L.K.E.R will be an FPS shooter/RPG game and Crysis will have amazing graphics. 8O

Cool, thanks for the recommends. Seems like AvP might be a good one. I'll eventually get em all. Hows the story for DOOM3? I know the graphics are decent...

I'm loving FarCry, its awesome, and I am definately getting fear. All good stuff. I think I am definately going to get CoD 1 for my first war shooter upon your recommendations

In Doom 3 you arrive on Mars as a new recruit. There's also Dr. Betruger and counsellor Swan who arrive on the same dropship. They go to a different place, but you see them later. A base officer sends you on your first mission to some old outpost to search for a missing technician and very soon hell breaks loose. Doom 3 is mainly a shooter but sometimes you encounter NPC characters which say some lines. Very often you also find PDAs of base personnel that contain voice logs, e-mail messages and some video material. The game takes place inside different complexes and later in hell, but there are some instances in which you have to run outside from the airlock of one building to an airlock of another building.

CoD 1 is a great game, buy personally I owuld buy the second one unless you're on a tight budget. There isn't much of a story in either game, its just going from building to building, killing bid guys. The second one is a little more intense and performs better graphics wise.

Battlefield 2 beats everything though. PC Gamers Game of the year 2005!

Alien vs Predator 2 starts with an animation in which marine teams board two dropships and fly to the planet (LV-1201?). Your dropship hits some mountain and is forced to land somewhere not exactly where it was supposed to land. At least the first two or three missions borrow a lot from the plot of James Cameron's Aliens.

But that's if you choose to play as a marine. In AvP 2 you can also play as an alien. You start as a facehugger spider who crawls from an opened egg. The egg was in some crate that was going to be shipped in a cargo ship, but then you escape because of some human negligence. 8O You have to find the correct person and attach to him. The second mission starts with red screen - omg, you are an embryo inside the person! 8O You have to burst through the guy's chest by using the shoot/eat button and escape as a little alien drone. Then you need to find and eat a cat to become the big black alien drone.

You can also play as a predator. The interesting thing is that there are storyline elements which are the same for all species. For example, when you play either as a marine or an alien you hear about an escaped predator and you visit the place where he was held. If you play as a predator, you are the one who was captured or who helped the captured predator to escape (don't really remember exactly).

Rob, out of curiosity, why were you disappointed in Prey? Is it just because of the lack of game length? Or was there something more?

Or should I just sit back and wait for your upcoming review? :)

I don't know if either are really for me then. I hate games without a defined story....

I just remembered one more very cool medieval war game which you could call an FPS shooter if you specialise in ranged weapons (bows, throwing daggers, javelins and such). The game is called Mount & Blade and you can download the game or see the screenshots here. It's the full game, but if you don't get a serial code your character won't be able to advance beyond level 6. The original game doesn't have a storyline, but you can download a StoryMod at another site to add an interesting and quite long plot to the game. Mount & Blade actually beats even TSE 4: Oblivion in some aspects of game play. It's quite breath-taking when you charge forward on your horse in front of your army and you see an army of enemy riders on the horison riding towards you in the beginning of the battle or when you are pursued by really tough black knights and you need to look back in order to shoot the pursuers but at the same time be aware of where you are riding, so that your horse doesn't run into a big stone or a tree. 8) There can also be situations when you manage to score a headshot with a bow from a great distance or when enemies manage to kill your horse and you desperately try to catch a horse or kill some rider and run after his horse while dodging enemy riders who try to circle around you and hit you with a sword or a lance. :p  The shot locations are quite precise, so if you use a bow you usually try to hit the head or legs if the enemy has a shield. Another alternative is shoot up the enemy's shield with lots of arrows so that the shield becomes destroyed. If it's a rider, you can try to kill the horse and when the guy falls to the ground quickly shoot him while he isn't blocking. The game's music isn't great, though, but the game feels great if you find some suitable music (e.g. themes from LoTR movies, the battle music from Ridley Scot's Gladiator or Ennio Moricone's "For a Few Dollars More" or "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly") and run it in the background with WinAmp or some other MP3 program.
October 6, 2006 1:33:06 PM

That actually sounds quite promising. Seems like a very expandable game. How is the replay value? And graphics of course.
October 6, 2006 3:24:30 PM

I think you should try it. The download is only 54mb and it's the full version. Together with Storymod the game takes only 180mb when installed. For a 180mb game it has surprisingly good graphics. If someone showed me the game, I'd guess it takes 300-500mb of space. You won't be able to develop your character above level 6, but if you get a serial code you can remove the level limit.
Here's the link:

http://www.taleworlds.com/download/mountandblade_0751_s...

I strongly suggest you also get and install Storymod v1.2 right away before you start the game.
Here's the link to mods for the game:
http://www.mbrepository.com/modules/PDdownloads/
Storymod v1.2 is the second most popular mod in the list of popular mods).

Btw, while visiting the link myself I just noticed that the most popular mod is a LoTR mod. Unfortunately, runs only on version 0.750. :(

You can read more about the game on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_&_Blade

When you start the game, choose Storymod instead of Mount & Blade in the starting screen.

Thanks for the info, I may check this out later once I can "get" a serial code. Anyway, more to the point, that is not a war shooter.

Bascially, go for the COD and BTF games, as they are the best.
