Hello all

I am having some issues picking out a MOBO. Will be putting a AXP 1800+ with 1GB (2x512) of PC 2700 DDR RAM. Video will be GeForce4 4200 128MB DDR. System will be used mostly for gaming. Please dont flame the video card. I could go better but I dont think its worth the $250 (Dont wanna see this discussion turn into a Video Card topic).

Here are the three boards that I have narrowed it down to. I have decided to go with the VIA chipset.

ABIT AT7 VIA KT333, ATA-133
ASUS A7V333 VIA KT333, ATA-133 RAID, USB 2.0, audio
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP VIA KT333, ATA-133 RAID, LAN, audio

Was wondering what board of the three everyone else likes? If you have other board/chipset suggestions plaese post them with a good explanation (dont wanna see "cause I think its good")

I respect alot of peoples opinion here in this forum and will base my decision on informative posts.

I've got a sweet setup going!

Soltek 75sldrv5 "The Purple Ray" motherboard
512Ram OCZ 3200 DDR400 CAS2.5
Athlon XP 1800 overclocked to 2200
Alpha Pal 6035 w/Delta fan
PNY Geforce TI4400 128MB
3Com 905 Nic 10/100
Soundblaster Live Gamer 5.1
HELC 350 watt power supply
40 gig Maxtor 7200rpm ATA133

My System screams and is stable. I've always been a fan of a Asus the are top notch. But Soltek has an excellant name for price and performance. You just cant beat the price of their motherboards considerably less than ASUS and OCZ ram kicks major ass. Keep your options open I got my Soltek Board for 77 dollars at NEWEGG free shipping it was 50 dollars less than ASUS A7V333. Options vary greatly the Soltek is a basic board great for overclocking. ASUS kicksass in the options category. It really depends on what you need Soltek has all the great things that the KT333 chipset brings to the table DDR333 and ATA133.

Try looking at the Abit KX7-333 w/or w/o Raid, it came highly recommended from some others on this board, and I just ordered it myself. It has some pretty stable OC ability, and is pretty stable with the 333. If you already have your other hardware picked out (Vidcard, Sound, Network card etc), then a no-frills speed-demon would be a good choice (KX7). But if you need the sound and net on the mobo, Id suggest either the Asus or the other Abit boards, since ive heard some mixed feelings on the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP. Usually going with a brand that has had consistantly high marks on different boards is better than going with a brandname that occasionally produces a decent board, and sometimes a bomb.

I have to agree with NullVector, the Abit KX7-333R is a great board for those
who already have a good NIC and Sound Card. At $100 for a Raid Motherboard,
its price/performance is hard to beat.

Abit KX7-333R, Abit Siluro Ti4400, XP1800+, 512MB Crucial DDR2100, WD 120 GB HD, Santa Cruz.

And now... just to CONFUSE you further, another opinion. (mine of course)

Im using the Epox 8K3A+ and cant be happier. It lacks onboard LAN and USB2.0, but i dont need either of those two options. and what it lacks is easily made up with tweaking options and sheer stability.

the 8k3a+ has the widest range of tweakable options ive ever seen, is an excellent overclocker, has a wide and clear cpu socket for any sized heatsink and 6 psi slots.
