All of you have to admit...EB games sucks. I bought Joint Operations:Typhoon Rising for PC there lately. The people there got me a box with the game inside it telling me the game was "brand new." When I got home and opened the box, there was no fricking serial key for me to install the game-ugh... I called the grouchy people on the Novalogic hotline, and when I told them I bought the game at EB games, they told me I was a loser and go away. Just kidding. What they really said was that they couldnt do anything about it because bla blah blah used games blah blah-WHOA, did they say used game? I thought EB games gave me a "brand new" game. I went back to EB games the next day, and they told me to shut up and go away because they said I stole the CD key. Argh. At least I got it installed using a keygen on the internet, and I already had a Novworld account *whew* I nearly wasted 10 good dollars there.
It gets better...
I went to this mall in Houston (The Galleria) and went to their EB games store (yup even after that experience I thought to myself hey-this store wont be like the OTHER one right? WRONG) Shortly after walking out with my "brand new" copy of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter that cost me $60. After I went back home, surprise, surprise-no CD key again. I called the EB games store this time yadda yadda yadda piss off. Oh, EB games makes my life so much easier. Fortunatley, I got a refund after arguing with them for a long time though.
Usually a sign that it's new is when there's plastic around the box... if there's no plastic, don't buy it. Demand one with wrapping.
That's not always true. Most PC games sold at retail locations (at least here in the US) don't come wrapped in plastic. They just have those annoying stickers hold the boxes closed.
*shrug* weird heheh differences between countries can be neat sometimes. Almost everything here is wrapped in plastic now.
Pre plastic days, like when I was buying EQ and expansions, I checked the boxes (they too had those stickers to hold them closed) right in front of the clerks. Rip it open and make sure everythings in there. Pretty easy to slip the sticker off and just grab shit.
I never bought any new games from an EB. Usually just used.
I've found their used selection to be really good honestly. Also whenever I've had a problem with a purchase they were always quick to correct the problem.
Maybe it has something to do with where you live. I just cannot say I've experienced these kinds of problems.
EB is good for used games and Gamestop is good for new. I usually shop depending on which I am looking for.
The OP and I are apparently both Houstonians, and I can say that I have not had your good luck with either store. EB's selection of used PC games has been in steady decline, and a number of their outlets have stopped carrying them altogether. This saddens me greatly, as I would rather buy used and save some money. At this point I am considering shifting my used game shopping to <shudder>Ebay</shudder>
I worked at the Gamestop in the Houston Galleria for a few years... The only new games that aren't wrapped should be if you end up buying the last one (box off the shelf).
When people wanted a wrapped version we'd just take it in the back, pop the game back in, and use the shrink-wrap machine to close it up.
Didn't get any complaints about missing keys though...
Well, I found out just a couple of months ago that they dont buy used PC games anymore due to serial key theft. If so, why I am I still getting all of these used games instead of brand new ones? :?
When EB was Electronics Boutique and was their own entity it was a good place to shop. PC games, Console games, applications, hardware, even some Mac stuff. Great return policy and at least somewhat knowledgeable employees.
Then the buyout\merger happened. Everything went down hill from there.
