Have you ever wondered...what if? For example, what if EA hadn't cancelled Ultima Online 2? TwitchGuru explores an alternate timeline to examine how the MMORPG market might have changed if the highly anticipated title had seen the light of day.
I don’t think that I have EVER played a MMORPG that has even come close to the experiences that I had while playing UO. UO in my opinion is the greatest online game in that genre. I still talk about past memories with friends about being Pked (Player Killers) or being in a guild where we owned a castle. The thing I loved about the game is that you felt like you had a sense of belonging, if in fact you really were in this world where almost anything could happen. Those of you that have played can relate to this. I can remember seeing the msg boards at the bank in town where it had like the top 20 PKers and had bounties on their heads, which you would get by killing them and bringing their heads to the nearest guard. These people were famous! I can still remember the PKer on my server who was always at the top of the list (ShortRound).
What I think sets UO apart from other online games is that it was not all about getting to the next level. They didn’t even have a level system! It was based off of skill, similar to Oblivion. You could fight with anyone you wanted to, you did not have to be within 4 levels.
I was really excited to hear about UO2 and equally disappointed when I heard that it was cancelled. I don’t think that there is a MMORPG out today that can compare to what UO was….maybe one day though…
I don't believe that UO2 would have ever had as many subscribers as WOW. One of the key factors in WOW is the simplicity and the number of quests available through all of the levels of a character. UO2 might have revolutionized the way games are created though. Instead of levels and exp grinding you would see more skill based games. Overall the complexity of the game would have created a better virtual world for those people really interested in being immersed into a virtual world, but would keep the younger generation from being able to understand the system fully compared to WOW.
Personally if UO2 had come out and was everything UO was in a First Person view then I would probably still be playing that game today. Other games like DAOC, AO, AC2 would not have been as popular as they were and many of the EQ crowd would have played UO2 instead.
