I remember reading that those cartridges (V40 series multifunction and 900
series) are remembered by the printer when they run out of ink and if filled
the user will continue to receive an out of ink prompt. Is there any way to
overcome that problem and can the cartridges be refilled successfully?

I refill both my 15 and 78 on a HP 950 and they both work. No special anything.
