Trouble saving changes in windows7

Hello,
I wish to save changes made with a text editor(notepad++) but windows says "please check if you have the file opened in another program". I really need to somehow save these changes and according to task manager nothing is running containing these files. Please help, thanks in advance.

look in the Task Manager/Processes, see if it is running there

where is the file located? is it in a windows UAC restricted folder?

Are you in a network environment? Could some-one else have opened the file. Was the file Read Only when you opened it?

You may be able to copy the contents of the file and paste it into a new file.
