The Cyberathlete Professional League will kick off its second World Tour Championship Finals event this Saturday. CPL founder and president Angel Munoz takes TwitchGuru behind the scenes of the CPL to talk about why pro gamers are true athletes and where the e-sports phenomenon is headed in the coming years.

It was mentioned that professional gaming was really fragmented, the only other gaming league I've heard of is PGL (Professional Gaming League) and I'm not even sure they are still around.

Who else is there? What other large gaming league exists? Just curious.

Damn, there are quite a few leagues nowadays.

The World Cyber Games (WCG); the World Series of Video Games (WSVG); World e-Sports Games (WEG); and the Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC). There are a few others, too, but those are considered the big ones along with the CPL.

I'm heading to Dallas for the CPL World Tour Championship this weekend. Never actually been to a pro gaming event live before, should be interesting.

I'm in the same boat as infornography here. Though I've heard those acronyms, it never clicked that those were leagues. Still hasn't. I figured when the PGL disappeared that the future of professional gaming as a sport went with it.

The only coverage I've ever seen is still photos. I remember back in the day hopping online to see if anyone had a video or in-game recording of Thresh pwning in Quake. I cared then, but now I'm only barely curious. I have a mental image of most pro gamers being Simon Cowell twins and I think that image stems back to the fact that without publicity I assume the pro gamers decided to not waste their time with other gamers/fans, just money making opportunities.

They really need more coverage and a better image. Thresh had a column in PC Gamer. That's the number one reason he's got a good image with me. Besides him, I've only heard of Fatal1ty (because of hardware licenses), KillCreek (who pwned John Romero, then married him), and the FragDolls. We could use some more stars.

"As for my all-time favorite, it's all about Doom. That's when I dropped my career in investment banking to get into gaming. I live in Dallas and Doom had a huge impact here. There's almost like a brotherhood here because you meet people in the game industry that you realize are in the industry for the same reason you are - because they played Doom and had this moment of illumination. And we all knew that the game was the future."

Add me to that list. I've been an avid gamer since I was about three, but the first thing I did after playing through Doom 2 was pick up a programming book. Now I'm a certified developer and amateur game designer going to college to make games for a living. Thanks, John Carmack.

I find it funny when Angel says this, CPL has sold the broadcasting rights for most mediums of coverage, and there's little to no window to other broadcasting companies in the esport world.

VBDude coverage in esports varies depending on the game. For example, counter strike has HLTV which allows spectators to connect to the server and watch the match as is played live. HLTV is only available to Half-Life based games. There's two other games with a HLTV-like program. One of them is Quake 3 (QTV) and the other one is Warcraft III (Waaagh!TV)
Other means of coverage include, scorebot (posts game events in IRC channels) everything related to the event (mostly covered by esports sites, such as gotfrag.com and ampednews.com)

that's all i can think to post right now, if you want me to go more into it you can ask in the post or you can pm me and i'll answer your question

does anyone know a good source to download pre-recorded demos of professional tournaments? I am specifically interested in watching professional tournament rounds of CSS.

I have tried to look several times, but have great difficulty finding pre-recorded stuff. it's nice that HLTV will allow you to watch live competitions, but I NEVER know when these competitions are taking place, and besides I don't see why it would be difficult to have demos recorded for people to watch afterwards, with no delays or wait time like live would have.

thanks!

torque look at Gotfrag.com they have a very large collection of demos some of them dating dating all the way to 2002, also look at HLTV.org they too have lots of demos.

thanks for the sites. I tried gotfrag before, but there did not seem to be any area to get demos besides the public forum, where everybody and their uncle posts their own demos. :) Maybe I should just scroll through the forum and try to find professional ones in there, I just hope they are obviously marked as being part of a professional tournament, etc. :)

I appreciate the other site, I will look at it as well!

well if you click that link it actually takes you to the gotfrag demo page, http://www.gotfrag.com/cs/demos there you can sort them by map and event. right now the cpl finals are happening if you want to watch connect to hltv.gotfrag.com:3101 or hltv6.no.gameguard.no:27060
