I do have Space Rangers 2 and Galciv2, I'd like to find some more turn based games that are not in the space genre. Games I liked in the past along these lines are X-com, Panzer General 1-3. I'm sort of hesitant on the Civ series, because I played the first one, and the game just took way too long to get to the nitty gritty combat. I'm a huge fan of the Axis and Allies board game, but I've heard the computer version has very bad AI.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Heye Sugarcane. If you liked galactic civilizations 2 you'll probably enjoy other paradox plaza tittles. Europa Universalis 2 is a great game, set on the Modern ages. You might also enjoy Crusader Kings, which is set on the medieval times. CK, though, is kind of hard to get started with and is somehow a mix between strategy and a character sim game. I find it fun to play, but maybe i'm just weird. 2 games made by them which I loved were Hearts of Iron (don't get HoI 2, it is annoying) and Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun. The fisrt one is set betwen 1933 and 1948 - if i'm not mistaken. You can play any nation in the world, and it is pretty fun after you get to learn how to manage the game. Victoria is even better in some aspects, but not being able to have planes and stuff is rather annoying. I'm assuming you don't mind older games with not-so-good graphics, so I will recomend the Close Combat series. Just stay away from CC4 as it sucks cows ass. There was a good series too called Combat Mission, they're pretty fun to play too. Now if you like tweaking things and changing how the game works you definetly should play any of the civilizations. I haven't played civ 4, but civ 3 rocks and you can mod it pretty easily. You said you were sort of hesitant on the civ series, but with the moding posibilities and the amount of scenarios you can find over the net you probably can find one where you'll step right into combat. Should also try Pharaoh and it's expansion. Also very easy to tweak as all you'll need it notepad - though it's more of a city building game than an strategy one. I hope that works for you.

Heye man. My pleasure bringing more people into the realm. =P Well, by the way I forgot. Most of those aren't turn based, but aren't those games where what matters is how fast you can click things (I hate those). Combat Mission is turn based. It's actually a pretty good gaming style. You give your orders and then your units will execute them for 1minute doing what they like.. he he he. Gives some sort of psychological aspect to the game. I'm always looking for new wargames and strategy games to play, so if you have suggestions just shoot. I'm always eager to play new games.

I agree with NaShOrN about Europa Universalis 2 although I disagree about HoI2 - I enjoyed that game too. Medieval 2 Total War and Rome Total War are not bad - sort of mix strategy and live action, but you can play them as strategy only.

My issue with HoI was the lack of freedom to develop tech. The techs have a predefined "appearance" date, so no matter if you try to research something earlier you won't be getting that tech. That realy annoyed me.

That’s a good point – I did find myself annoyed with that same thing. But I was impressed with the massive scope of the game, probably the best WW II game since the old Panzer General Series – certainly more detailed than Axis and Allies.

Not sure if this will be helpful to you or not, but I play "Real Time" strategy games as if they were turn-based, against the computer. You just hit pause, and most games still allow you to scroll around the map and collect information and issue commands before re-starting the game.

One I can warn you to avoid is "Hearts of Iron". You need to be a computer genius to fix all the bugs, and the game is MASSIVELY complex and confusing.

"Rise of Nations" has a pretty good turn-based system.

Sid Mier's Civilization, as it stands, actually tends to PUNISH a player for being warlike.

If you add on the Civilization: Conquests expansion, this adjusts.

You are smart to read reviews and download demos before buying. Axis and Allies, even with the expansion, does have rotten AI. You can hot-seat it with a friend, and play online, but it isn't great.

Don't forget to check the "reccomended" system specs. For example, all the Empire Earth games LIE ON THE BOX. The requirements are way, way above what it claims.

You may enjoy the offbeat "Black and White" series, which can be obtained very inexpensively.

A very limited, but fun game is "Shattered Union" about a second civil war in America in our era. Limited replay, flawed, but has some very fun elements to it.

You might like the old Panzer General series.

Good luck!!!!!

You might want to try the total war series. Most of the strategy is turn based only the combat is real time. I prefer turn based to real time but this is a treat.

An older game that I enjoy is the Disciples series. Disciples 2 comes in a gold version that I believe also has Rise of the Elves on it. I think it's available at strategyfirst.com.
