Setting Bios

Hey, I have some questions about some of the BIOS feature in the GA-7VRXP. First off what is the S.M.A.R.T HDD feature?

Also, what is the AGP Aperture size?

What is the ACPI Standby State? It has an option of setting it to S1 or S3 so what is that?

What's USB Dev Wakeup From S3~S5? It says I can only set this if I set the ACPI to S3.

What is the Suspend Time Out feature? Is it like standby in Windows or something else?

What is PME event wake up?

What is the onboard FDC? I have no idea what this stands for and the book doesn't give a description.

That's pretty much all the questions I have. The manual doesn't give a very good description of some of the features included in the BIOS and since this is my first time building I really have no clue what to set them to. My thanks to anyone who helps.

How can my feet smell if it doesn't have a nose?

OK, a little help.

SMART is a BIOS feature that is supposed to warn you if your hard drive is starting to go bad so you can backup your data before it has a catastrophic failure. Nice idea, but I've never seen it work. And it probably slows your computer slightly.

ACPI is Advanced Power Configuration Interface. It has two main purposes, one is to help Windblows to autoconfig cards and the other is to enable certain power saving features.

USB Dev Wakeup means you can bring your computer out of suspend with a USB device, such as a USB mouse.

Don't even bother with the Suspend Time Out Feature, Windblows has it's own features.

FDC is the Floppy Drive Controller

Thanks that helped a lot and you made it sound so simple. The crappy manual used all those fancy words that made no sense. Anyway what about the PME even wake up?

I don't know what PME means, but wake up means to resume from suspend, and wake up events are signals that bring your computer out of suspend mode.

You can learn more about RAID at http://www.finitesystems.com/PRODUCT/raid/raidlevel.htm The basic thing to remember is that Level 0 is the fastest, while RAID 5 is faster and more secure than non-RAID. Most performance users prefer RAID 0.
