Bonni,
If none of the other advice has helped.
To get out of your catch 22 situation - 'can't get on internet to download
fixes needed to get internet access', I'd suggest this.
Go to your local magazine store and browse the computer magazines that have
cover discs.
Many (here in the UK anyway) include several general applications - look for
one that has Netscape Navigator, or maybe Netscape 7.1 , Opera or Mozilla on
the disc and install one of them.
Many spyware/parasite invaders attack Internet Explorer directly.
However, use an alternative browser to get online and download the
programmes recommended previously in earlier posts.
Most importantly, also enable the built in XP firewall (open Windows Help
and enter 'firewall' for instructions) before going online, and also get a
proper firewall once you're online from www.zonelabs.com for free.
Get version 3 rather than version 5 if possible - there are some complaints
about the later version, though I haven't tried it.
Also AVG anti virus is very good, and also free, from www.grisoft.com
Hopefully this route will work for you.
Good luck
Chek
