Hey guys I just added a 7600GT(Thank for the help!) into my pc and I'm looking for a couple of good games. I have about 100 bucks from Xmas left to get a couple of new games and I'm deciding between getting Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 2 and also an RTS game besides Company of Heroes since I have it already.
most people swear Oblivion is the most amazing game in the world, personally I thought it was OK, but it was the kind of game I had to MAKE myself start playing, then it got me going. The enemies are programmed to be equal level to you as you progress in the game, so I found that a bit frustrating because I did not feel much more powerful as I leveled up (though I had more skills to use so the controls got more complicated). Honestly, the FUN factor was not really there for me too often, though the quests were pretty creative at times. It has the feel of a Thief game.
As for RTS, the only other one I have tried and really enjoyed was Warcraft 3. The RTS genre does not seem that active right now, though I personally find the AOE games too slow and plodding. If you liked AOE2 maybe AOEIII should be on your list of potentials.
For the RPG end, NWN 2 is very similar to NWN 1, cheesy transparent hack and slash plot with mediocre gameplay strapped to an interesting campaign development system that allows the community to make campaigns that don't suck. If that sort of idea appeals to you, go for it, if you want more substance out of your RPGs I'd look somewhere else.
Oblivion was a lot of fun but it had a couple of glaring issues. First off the leveling system was... ill conceived. Second the savegame system was poorly handled (if you have multiple characters then you have to dig through the long list of saves to find the last one on your other character). There are mods to correct the second issue, but not really the first. The only other major issue would be that there is so much exploration you can do that it is easy to get sidetracked from the plot, then bogged down by the repetition, then quit before beating the main plot. Kinda disappointing. Other than those issues, the game was fun. The plot was fairly engaging, and the gameplay was interesting.
There really has been a bit of a dearth of good PCRPGs lately. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age to fill the gap. You might want to hold on to some of that money to pick it up instead.
On the RTS side I'd recommend Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War : Dark Crusade (long title, I know). If you enjoyed Company of Heroes, you should enjoy this as well, same developer, though while both games share some gameplay mechanics, they are different enough that they are very distinct. If you can, you might want to pick up the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War gold pack as well which includes both the original and the first expansion, but you can play Dark Crusade without the original.
EXactly torque, finally someone who thinks like me! Everyone bums oblivion saying its the best game ever but it misses the whole POINT of a game which is to have fun and relax for a while without having to spend hours figuring out how to play the game properly!
