So we decided our XP system should go wireless and bought a nice shiny
Airport Express plus a less shiny Linksys WUSB54G USB wireless access
point.
Plugged in the Linksys and installed the drivers, then plugged in the
Airport Express and ran the install CD.
The problem is that the "Airport Express Assistant" doesn't work. It
brings up a dialog box saying "an error occurred when trying to access
the wireless networking sub system" and then fails to find the Airport
Express. The XP wireless network connection won't show the Airport
either.
Would be grateful for any suggestions as to what's wrong, as the
manual is bloody useless...

Have you looked at the Express Support page
<http://www.apple.com/support/airportexpress/> and the AirPort Networks
for Windows PDF? Note that you must have Wireless Zero Configuration
installed <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108049>.
