cant get flight controls working for battlefield 1942

I have the Saitek x35T Throttle and the X36F Control Stick. I have managed to get the controls working partially. I can now control the aircraft as advertised but it will not allow me to program the firing buttons. I have tried to assign them to every button on each control and still no joy. Does anyone have a clue how to fix this issue so I can go blow some things up?

this is just a stretch but it might be a compatibility error.especially if your joystick is new( hve no idea if it is, but...). if you have an older one lying around ,try it out. other wise u can just get bf2. cause i know for a fact all newer joysticks work with it(well every one ive tried did).
