After cleaning up comp Windows Media can't work...

Aloha dudes and duddettes,

I dunno what happened? I used the 2003 Norton Utilities to clean my comp. I dunno what I did but cleaned it up.... i'm thinkin that it affected my windows media for some reason. any how i got some files saved on my HD and when i click on it says

"Windows cannot find Crogram Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

and when I download musics from a shareware place I can't play it right after I download it!?!?!?

Anyone can help me like how I've been helped before...... all help is appreciated.

I'm assuming you're using Windows XP, and control panel is in classic view, otherwise it'll vary slightly.

Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add Remove Windows Components. Scroll down to windows media player and uncheck the box. Click Next. Click Finish. Repeat the process but this time check the box next to windows media player.

If that doesn't work go and download the *latest* version of Windows Media Player (Internet Explorer>Tools>Windows Update). Of course, I don't know why you'd want to use Windows Media Player at all ;o)

MP has more adjustments to make it sound better/jucier, but is stupidly slow when you click on "Next" batten.

If you're just watching movies, check out <A HREF="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/" target="_new">this</A>

Even plays .BIN files and incomplete movies, only downside is that the 'slidebar' is somewhat wack.

Edit: Oh forgot the most important part; it does not require any codecs, which is absolutely splendid.
I hate to have to install NIMO or ACE codec packs, messes up the system (for me anyway)...keep it clean.

ok here is a list of the differences that IMO are significant.

Winamp's interface is highly skinable, so is WMP9 i guess, however Winamp 5 suports both the old winamp 2 skins (which are so low on computer memory useage that a 200Mhz (and matching era memory) computer will run them fine while playing music. and it also suports winamp 3 skins (aka modern skins) which use slightly more memory but are free form so can be anything you want to design. (the old ones were just overlays)

winamps memory useage and CPU useage is a fraction of that of WMP. i have a 2.4Ghz computer, i use FLAC files to store my music (its a loseless compression) i have winamp running at about 0.5% average CPU with nothing else running excpet WinXP stuff. WMP uses about 2-3%

my personal experience is that Winamp suports a good solid number of music formats, however there are a few like copy protected WMA files which you don't ahve full functionality with winamp (due to microsoft) but other than that most formats, Ogg, MP3, FLAC, ACC..... are all suported by winamp (some with plugins, but with all the plugins you can use all the frmats basicly).

for video winamp will work fine, however IMO its a perfect music library and organisation tool for music but i choose not to use it for video. for video i use Zoom Player, which is far superior to WMP in video. (especially with a tv out)

but yes its basicly my opinion that winamp is less bloaty than WMP, and its more to my personal interface likings.

for me this is perfect. i am not really looking at the media player much excpet for song selection and organisation, so having so much text is fine for me it might seem a bit confusing by you can always turn off all the views as well as the EQ.

anyway test it out see if you like it yourself.
