Can't send msg in Outlook 2003

new to xp, have configured e-mail account for earthlink according to windows online instructions. test e-mail worked, but after composing, clicking send, and then "send/receive" button, get following error msg:
"operation failed. object missing"
have removed and reloaded Office in an attempt to remedy, but that didn't work either.
Help!!!!!
