Help: Problem with Pavilion a520n

When I put a music/data cd into the cd-rom or cd/dvd-rw drive, I hear a very
loud fan type sound (like an air conditioner on full blast or a car being
revved up). When I stop/eject the disc, the sound becomes *much* softer. Should
this be happening? Is the sound coming from the fan or the drives? Somtimes,
I'll also hear this loud sound (briefly) when websurfing. I like the system
specs but can't hear music over all the noise. Thanks for your help.
